ROBBER SHOT DEAD BY RESIDENT: Richmond County authorities are working to identify a man who was fatally shot while invading an apartment on Battle Row this morning in Augusta.
At 2 a.m. this morning, the robber was seen outside 1916 Battle Road arming himself with a shotgun and putting on a mask. When he forced entry into Apartment D, resident Bobby Lockhart shot the intruder, according to sheriff's Lt. Blaise Dresser said.
The resident's girlfriend, Pamela Newton, was also inside the apartment when the home invasion occurred, the lieutenant said.
The unidentified man was rushed to Georgia Health Sciences University, where he was pronounced dead from multiple gunshot wounds.
"Lockhart was questioned concerning this incident and released," Lt. Dresser said.
Authorities are using fingerprints to try to identify the man before his body is taken to the GBI Crime Lab in Atlanta for autopsy.
