I picked up a box of the Hdy 225 BTHP mainly for the 30-06, but figured I'd give them a go in the 308Win for R&D.....grin.

Here's a quick report of my findings today. The biggest surprise was that they were stable and accurate at 308 Win velocities, in a 1/12 twist bbl. It's a fairly long bullet at 1.585". I ran the data through the JBM stability calculator, and it calc'd stability in the "marginal" range.

Rifle used:
Rem 700 308 Varmint bbl, 1/12 twist, cut to 20.5"
McMillan HTG stock
Bushnell 3200 10X Mil/Mil
CopyofPC080019.jpg

Load:
Hornady 225gr BTHP (moly'd)
Win brass
CCI 200 primer
RL-17 Powder, 48.0gr
MV: 2500 fps
OAL: 3.08" (.008" off lands)
PC140003.jpg

I only loaded up 17 rounds for a quick test. The plan was to shoot two over the the chrono, five at 100 yds, five at 600 yds, and five at 1200 yds.

Two over the chrono clocked 2486, and 2492 fps at 10 yards. Call it 2500 fps MV for practical purposes, warmer temps, etc. Temp was about 30F, wind near calm. No signs of excess pressure. Primers looked normal, bolt lift normal.

105 yards: four of five went into .5". Based on the consistency of the four, I believe I pulled one shot that opened it up to 1".
PC190003.jpg

590 yards: dialed 4.2 mils, and was right on the money on a melon sized rock. 5/5 hits.

1185 yards: Dialed 12.3 mils, three hits and two misses at 12 oclock on a 15" rock.

Hornady published BC for this bullet is .670. I read a couple reports here that it shoots closer to .710.

I did a traj table up using a BC of .700, 4500' el, std atmo. The predictions were right on at 590 yds, and a couple high hits at 1185 yds. Pretty close.

Re: Hornady 225gr BTHP in the 308 Win

Have to get me a box! Thanks! How many rounds thru your rifle?

Re: Hornady 225gr BTHP in the 308 Win

Hey Shane, that's great news. I have an 11.27tw that I've been shooting 175's from but I never gave any look at the bigger stuff just based on the twist rate.

Do you know what the DA was when you were shooting these from the 12?

I'm at much lower altitude but it's still warmer here I'm sure (today's in the high 40's and low 50's still).

Re: Hornady 225gr BTHP in the 308 Win

That's cool, Shane! Waiting on a custom reamer... as soon as that get's here we'll fling some from Dan's 30" WM. Loaded rounds on those are 3.75"

We'll have to hook up again and wreck some more rocks.

Re: Hornady 225gr BTHP in the 308 Win

bohem, pressure here was about 25.5 Hg, and temp 30F.

jrob, sounds like a nice 300WinMag. Let me know when you're passing through, and we can definitely crack a rock or two.

Re: Hornady 225gr BTHP in the 308 Win

I'd like to hook up with you guys out there some day, & sling some 225's around. But it's a little far to drive for a shooting trip. And my rifle will never be in the hands of TSA, so flying is out.
What do you need to do to get the BC dialed in? I'm using a G1 of .710, with FFS, & it's real close. Yesterday I made a DK adjustment to .503. The G7 @ .345-.346 is working better, with the shooter ap, but still not perfect. About .1-.2 moa off @ 1250yd. Close enough for me, but I'd like to get it perfect if at all possible. Yeah. I'm just like that.

Re: Hornady 225gr BTHP in the 308 Win

I just ran the G1 .700 using QuickTarget. I was hitting a tad high at 1200, so .710 is probably closer to the truth.

Re: Hornady 225gr BTHP in the 308 Win

Do you have to single load them or will they fit into your mag box on the 308?

Re: Hornady 225gr BTHP in the 308 Win

BigWheels....

I should be in Kettle Falls in May for the match there. Anywhere near you? I'll be shooting my .260, but I bet my boy would let me bring his 300 if it meant some really long fun!

Re: Hornady 225gr BTHP in the 308 Win

MM, you have any problems with temperature sensitivity with RL17 like I did? I was getting some pretty wild velocity swings with not a huge change in temperature. I've been steering clear since it seems to shoot good monday, 10 degrees cooler on tuesday and it's not shooting for poop.

I've gotten 2500fps with 208's and varget, I doubt I can do it with 225's.

You gonna get those new berger 215's or 230's and try 'em out?

Single load. My factory mag box allows about 2.815" max, these are loaded to 3.08"

In my 208 AMax load I'm loading 50.0gr RL17, under a moly'd 208, to 3.00" OAL, in Win brass. This load goes about 2620 in the summer, and 2580 in the winter (20.5" Rem bbl). So, not what I consider excessive. Could be it swings wider with a softer load.

I don't see myself trying the Berger 215/230 any time soon. I'm sure they are excellent bullets, but I'm a big fan of the quality and economy of the Hornady bullets.

I'll most likely not be there. I went the yr before last, but probably won't have the spare money. The economy hit me hard back in '08. I was probably one of the 1st ones to lose my job ,& I'm still trying to get my business over the top. Maybe next yr.
Kettle Falls is almost the other side of the state from me. I'm on an island just south of Canada.

Not to derail Shane's thread.... yeah, '08 was when we first started to really feel it too. Getting the feet under us finally and the accountant (wife

) is confident enough that I think I'm gonna commit to the My match.

We'll hook up at some point. I have kids in Spokane, and life isn't over yet.

And you're welcome any time you get to MT.

Re: Hornady 225gr BTHP in the 308 Win

Hey I used to know the country around Spokane to Kettle Falls.

During my grade school years I lived in Chewelah, Addy, and Colville.

Jeez, that was a long time ago.

Re: Hornady 225gr BTHP in the 308 Win

John, Thanks for the thought, but I'll pass on that.

I'm sure it's a good shoot, but for my purposes/goals I find it tough to spend loot to go shooting elsewhere with good places in the back yard.

Re: Hornady 225gr BTHP in the 308 Win

Shane,

I hear you... I started to get bored of shooting stuff in MY back yard.... but we have different back yards.

I shot Potomac this year and had a blast and did well (except for the stage where I was one full rev. off on the elev. knob.... who say ZS's are not nice?) So looking to try some more and see how it goes. I did have a ton of fun shooting rocks with you and Broz, and it was a hell of a lot cheaper... so I can be persuaded.

Re: Hornady 225gr BTHP in the 308 Win

I hear that as well. Where I shoot is about an hour away from my house, & I have a few clear cuts to shoot in. The same targets at the same ranges all the time. I like to get out to different places, & shoot different stuff, but the $$ thing is really holding me back now. If I can ever get out that way I'll let you know, & we can get together for some rock crushing.
I spent my younger yrs in Pullman, BTW, so I know a little about the Spokane area as well.
Anyway. I'm loving these new 225's. At 2860 fps they are flying freight trains, & flat shooting ones at that. I'll never try another Berger, or Sierra bullet again, unless they start to price them competitively with Hornady. I'm happy with the quality, & will not buy a box of bullets that will only perform slightly, if any better for almost twice the price.

Re: Hornady 225gr BTHP in the 308 Win

The Bergers are definitely pricey... the big question is... will they behave after going subsonic? The Hornadys are a very conservative design with a reasonably high BC and an attractive price. When we designed the new reamer, we used a 225. The 230 Target Hybrid will still work, but it's a bit of compromise. I just figured that we would send mostly 225's from this rifle.

Shane, be interested to see what kind of speeds you get from your long barrel and the '06.

John

Re: Hornady 225gr BTHP in the 308 Win

John, My 30-06 is only a 22.5" bbl after I had it cut/braked.

I'm thinking it should make 2600-2650 fps with the 225s. Basically a 100 fps loss from the 208s, but with a better BC.

Re: Hornady 225gr BTHP in the 308 Win

Too pricey for me. The only thing that would get me to try them is if I started hearing that they transition sub sonic well, & they fly flatter than the BC predicts, like the Hornady's do. I don't remember now if I posted this, but I called Hornady about the BC of the 225's, & wanted the velocities they tested the .670 BC with. They told me that they tested them @ 2500-2600 fps. I told them what my data was, & the velocity I was getting, & they said that above 2600 fps they had seen it to be as high as .710. I was relieved. I was thinking that some how my little 300WM was pushing them to over 3000 fps with no pressure. So now I know that I'm not crazy after all. The .710 G1 is working pretty well with FFS. The .356 G7 in Shooter is almost perfect.

Re: Hornady 225gr BTHP in the 308 Win

That .710 is very encouraging. We may not even try the Bergers... QL predicts close to 2950 from the 30" barrel at this COAL, so these should work very nicely way past 2000 yds.

Shane,

It'll be fun to see just how far that 308 can toss these. They'll be easier to spot in the snow.

Re: Hornady 225gr BTHP in the 308 Win

Yeah. I'm verry happy with the performance of the Hornady's. And for the price, they can't be beat. I just wish I didn't have to spend 2 boxes to figure out what the BC actually was. Hornady told me they published the lower BC so the "average Joe" couldn't complain that it was low. They can always be happy when it's higher than the published one. Can't blame them for that, I guess.

I'm kinda resurrecting this one a bit, but I am getting the itch to try out some of these heavies in my .308. I don't have a vibratory tumbler or moly equipment, however. Has anyone tested these as a naked bullet vs. moly? I would be shooting them out of a Savage 10 FCP with 24" factory barrel.
