Can someone give me the max load for this powder for 150gr and 180 gr sst's/interbonds? I made a guess on the sst's from the imr data on a nosler 150sst, but want to see how "crazy" that is compared to hornady's actual data. I cannot find the new version of the load manual locally . Thanks! (44.5 gr compressed in a fed case over fed210 = awesome accuracy out of a 22" winchester bbl., but is it safe? No pressure signs were found on the workup) after using it on 175 smk's in my 5r Mil Spec, and this gun I am hooked.

Here is the data from Hodgdon/IMR. http://data.hodgdon.com/cartridge_load.asp if it does not show up you will have to fill in the caliber and cartrige type after agreeing to terms of use.

Looks like minimum load for 150s is 40.0Gr at 2604fps (does not specify barrel length) Max is 44.5gr (compressed). 180s show 36gr min to 40gr Max. Max for 175 SMK is 42.5gr puts you at 2gr over suggested max load if your talking .308 WIN which I'm assuming given bullet weight and powder charge. You may not be seeing high chamber pressures now which is fine. Just remember to monitor it closely as you get into the hot summer months as it will speed up your burn rate (should not be dramatic since 8208 is an "extreme powder" like Varget and Benchmark). Always something to be mindful of.

In the 2011 Hodgdon manual for IMR 8208 XBR-

For the 175 SIE HPBT- 42.5 grains is max

For the 180 gr Speer SP - 40 grains is listed as max

For 150 Nos BT - 44.5 grains is max

Here you go:
According to the Hornady 8th Ed.
150-155 grain bullets = MAX load of 44.2gr 8208 XBR
178-180 grain bullets = MAX load of 41.0gr 8208 XBR

I did a 5 shot group with some 155 A-Max rounds loaded with 44.5grains (this is over the Hornady published max) yesterday at 100yds that made one ragged hole out of my 18" Infidel.

It was too busy at the range to set up the chronograph, but I loaded up 10 more at 44.5gr, so I can get a bit more sampling. Also, I've got some more loads to try that are loaded even warmer, as I did not get any compression or signs of any pressure at 44.5 grains.

I'm using Fed Brass, WLR Primers, XBR (of course), and 155gr A-Max. OAL is about 2.845", just short of the AICS unmodified magazine length of 2.850".


I've, also, got some 178 A-Max loaded up for some OCW testing.
Can't wait to see how they do.

Queeqeug, Johnson, and Scap, thanks for your replies! That is the IMR data I refered to using. The velocity out of my 5R milspec at the max load using 175 smk's win brass and fed 210 is right at the listed 2660 fps as listed on the site. That is my load for the forseeable future for that round as it is solidly sub 1/2 moa at the least for 5 shots +. For this win M70 hunting rifle, I decided to use the hornady bullets for thier value and performance. While the load data included bullets in that weight, and I used it while CAREFULLY stepping up to max as listed, I wanted to check the Hornady data Scap posted, as it is always better to know where you stand even if you are tweaking some obviously anemic loads such as you get with sierra, lol. As stated above, this rifle loves the bullet/powder/primer combos listed so far. I am loving the 8208 coolaid for all who are thinking of trying it. I am willing to trade a little velocity for stable velocity and it is definitely performing for me.

No worries, I'm happy to help when I can.

I shot some strings over the chrono this morning.
155 A-Max:
~2700 fps with 44.5 gr
~2795 fps with 44.7 gr
~2815 fps with 44.9 gr (best group)
~2822 fps with 45.1 gr
~2837 fps with 45.3 gr

178 A-Max:
~2410 fps with 39.0 gr
~2440 fps with 39.5 gr
~2460 fps with 40.0 gr
~2480 fps with 40.5 gr
~2510 fps with 41.0 gr
~2540 fps with 41.5 gr (this load is over the Hornady published max)

Based on Hornady's numbers, my 155's track right along with their published velocity. But the 178's are moving right about 100 fps faster than the book.

I might be able to get the 178's to go a bit faster and tighten up some more before I see any pressure.

I guess there is always the chance that 178's and XBR just won't get along...
