I have been messing with my LnL AP for about a week now and I have the continuing issue that the priming arm doesn't consistently return to the position where the primer can be seated in the pocket. It sticks under the primer tube location.

If I tighten the primer tube mount up like the instructions say, it hangs up about 90% of the time and I have to fiddle with it to snap it in place.

If I leave it about 1/2 turn from being tight so that the entire tube mount and primer tube itself can float, then the reliability comes up to about 50/50.

I have disassembled it and checked for burrs, cleaned it, and did find a single small burr. I polished it off and I still have the issue.

The second issue that I find is about 15% of the time the plate will not index properly, and I've tried adjusting the index driving "teeth" that are at the base of the operating link, as per the instructions.

It seems that if I want it to run I need to snap it up and down quickly, but that has a tendency to either spill powder or knock the bullet off the case mouth before it's seated properly.

Can some of you guys help me out with the issues? I tried reading through the manual and troubleshooting via the instructions, but I haven't had much luck. It did improve things quite a bit, but it's not even close to 100%.

Am I just being too picky and expecting something to run more smoothly than it really does?

Re: Hornady LnL function issues

Have you tried any of the vids that Hornady has on their site?
Bought mine just for the free bullets a couple of years ago.
Just Started playing with it myself.
Had problems with the priming rod not right, and crunched it!
We only have a couple ops set up on it.
Most we still do by hand.

Kinda use it like a glorified single stage, only I can get three ops on a straight wall with one pull of the lever!
Haven't played with the powder charger. Figure 1200 is probably still better way.
Quick change bushings are sweet!
Wish I could be more help.

Re: Hornady LnL function issues

I completely forgot about the vids. It was shipped with a DVD of instructions, I was setting it up after having moved, I hadn't put the TV and DVD player on the wall before I was rebuilding my reloading bench. Anna gave me a little hell for that one.

The major deciding factor between the Hornady and the 550B was that I didn't have money for a 650's features but I wanted them. When I found out the bullets came for just shipping costs I ordered it the same day.

I've got it working very smoothly for 44mag except for the issues I complained about. I had to completely disassemble, acetone wash, and reassemble the charge thrower to get any kind of consistency from it. Just wiping down the oil from the mechanism wasn't cutting it like the instructions suggested.

Re: Hornady LnL function issues

I have had similar problems with my LNL.
I found that putting a small wooden dowel on top of the primers in the tube solved that problem.
also when you run out the dowel stops the feeder in the back position. you can also mark the dowel with a pen to mark a position that shows your almost out of primers.
good luck, I like mine for pistol loading but run my co-ax for rifle loading

Re: Hornady LnL function issues

Roy- The press actually comes with a little fiberglass rod that slips down the tube. There were no instructions regarding it, but I can't imagine what else it would be for. I already marked it and it does stick the arm back when it's empty. Thanks for the ideas

Re: Hornady LnL function issues

That mirrors my initial experience with my LNL. I touched up the contact surfaces of the priming system with some very fine emery cloth and it's been trouble-free since. I had to make a few small indexing adjustments in the first thousand rounds or so, but it runs like clockwork now. I keep an aerosol can of computer keyboard cleaner on my bench to remove the grains of powder the inevitably get spilled-not sure if it actually helps but it makes me feel better...

Thanks, looks like I have a little polishing to do tonight while I watch the instructional dvd.
