Re: Hornady Super Performance safe for semis yet?
I have shot quite a bit of the 5.56 Superformance out of a 21" Sig 556 DMR and had zero problems. However, I recently shot a few rounds of the .308 Superformance I had sitting around for about a year out of my DTA SRS Covert bolt gun. Unfortunately, I can't claim ignorance because I was aware of all the issues others have had with the Superformance ammunition.
On the 8th round, a primer popped and shot gas back inside the bolt. Not sure yet what it did inside, but afterwards, I could only get very light primer strikes, which were not enough to fire rounds. I suspect either the firing pin is cracked or possibly the spring is damaged. In any event, I will never use the Superformance ammo again. It looks great on paper, but it's simply not worth the potential problems that can arise using it. Even if you have used it before with no problems, it only takes one bad round to create a major headache.
