first up please remember this is in australian $$$

i have found a site online with some cheap a-max projectiles (up to 20C a projectile cheaper then elsewhere i can find in OZ) and i am after you personal opinion on what you would choose.

i will be using these in a .308 Tikka T3 supervarmint and shooting out to a max of 1100 yards (typicaly 600 > 800)

168 BTHP 250 for $100 (40c each)

155 a-max 100 for $47.85 (48c each)

168 a-max 250 for $121 (48.4c each)

208 a-max 100 for $53.7 (53.7c each)

in torn between mostly the 208 and the 155...

I'd get 208's and 168 OTM's. Shoot mostly the 168's and when you decide to run it long (the 1100 shots) then swap out for the 208's.

Those 168's shoot well even at extended distances, practice with the cheapest match grade bullet and use the 208's to less voluminous practice and when it matters.

Re: hornandy bullet choice - what would you choose ?

ive got 2,500 150 grain winchester power points i picked up for 4c a projectile ($100 for about 2,500) and they work great to 650 yards or so, even out to 1000, but there in the 800 fps range at those ranges.

im leaning towards the 208's and just getting 500 or so and like you said just using them for the extended ranges

**edit** i should be saying ill be using varget (ADI AR2208) and i see that its getting arround 2400fps, is that really enough ? ive got 8 pound (4kg) of the varget and another 24 pound (12 kg) comming in the next moth or two..

Re: hornandy bullet choice - what would you choose ?

Why aren't you looking at the 178 AMAX as well? The 178 AMAX would be my choice for a .308 to 1000.

Re: hornandy bullet choice - what would you choose ?

i missed the 178 in the list, they are $49.60 per 100

why im mostly leaning to the 208's still is around here we never really get a day under 10 mph winds, quite often 15> 20 and the 208's would be the better choice for wind as i understand it

1+ on the 178 AMAX. The 208 AMAX is good but I would reserve them for the 300 WM. Don't want to start a whole new debate on this. But, yes I have shot them out of my AIAW 308. And it did fine. But it would be more suitable for the 300 WM in my opinion.

Unless you're going to load with Reloder-17, you'll never get the 208 AMAX to velocities where the extra wind deflection will matter, at least not out of a .308 case. With conventional powders, it's just not going to happen.

Like Rob said, the 178s will probably yield best results with the more common powders.

That's a good price relative to the others and not a bad bullet.

thanks for all the input.

also found some 155 lapua too for $52 per 100 everywhere else is around $80 im thinking that could be the best bet now, decisions decisions decisions

Re: hornandy bullet choice - what would you choose ?

Wind deflection is, in large part, a product of flight duration.

When choosing a bullet for extreme range, I would take muzzle velocity and bc, input it ito a ballistic calc program, and see which one arrives 'out there' sooner. Then scan over and compare that against wind deflection.

With the .308, choices between the 178 and 208 could well end up being counterintuitive.

I concur completely with LL about the .308 being, at best, an 800 yard chambering. I seriously doubt, expecially with winds customarily 10MPH and greater, that the really long range performance will be particularly to your liking.

This is why I have divested all of my .308's in favor of .260 and .30-'06, and am actively working to develop a .280 Rem for serious LR performance.
