Having a bit of a quandry here. I've been a horus user for years. I love the retical and the idea behind it, but I think I'm ready to move away from them. I recently had one of my older scopes fail, and have heard a lot of negatives regarding the company. Rather than replace the broken scope (since their warranty sucks) with another horus, I'm looking to change to another system.

My concern is mainly tracking. For whatever reason I find it hard to trust the tracking in any scope. Does anybody have any suggestions for a reliable scope that is not in the S&B range as far as price goes? I tried a Nightforce, but even it seemed to skip a few clicks.

I'm a mil/mil guy too, which makes it even harder.

Re: Horus Alternative

It's possible you are the fault on the tracking test. I really think many people who condemn a scopes tracking are not aware of just how finite of a process it is.

Me too. As an old iron sight Service Rifle guy since I was 23 or so, it is *still* an act of faith for me to dial in when I can't see the adjustments move up from the bottom or away from the center. If they weren't so rare and expensive, I'd get an old-fashioned long external-adjustment scope for my little Anschutz target .22...

I'm open to this idea, but would like to know how it could be me. Any info you could help me out with would be great.

Re: Horus Alternative

Borrowed an nxs from a friend. When we were shooting out to 1k the scope wasn't matching the data we had around 600. However, on my horus it was dead on everywhere. Finally realized that somewhere in there, the tracking had to be off on the scope by about .5 moa.

Re: Horus Alternative

You have to be exactly at a 100 meters or 100 yards, if you're off by a couple meters, or yards, you will have a couple percentage deviation. Also, have to be sure your graph is dead nuts, as well as you have a rigid mount. The "box test" has never worked for me. Last scopes I checked, I actually made a ridged mount with a pic rail at a buddies house, and attached rings to it. The fact that I used a laser vs actually measured it out by tape probably brought a few precent error into it.

I'm not saying you're a dumb ass or anything, I'm just saying that I've seen people QUICK to condemn a scope over a few precent error, but then when you see their methods, there is error in them.

LL's method of testing the tracking is pretty easy and fast, it involves shooting at the target, which brings human error, and might not tell you to the tenth mill how your scope is tracking, but it tests it to the extreme ends, and your patterns will show you the way.

I just like to test precision instruments precisely. Also know that all scopes will have a couple precent error in them. They are machines.

Re: Horus Alternative

Thanks for the reply. I was actually at 99 yards according to two different laser rangefinders. Never even considered that mattering.

I guess it isn't really any concrete evidence that scopes can't track well enough. more like me just being a pain in the ass and not wanting to dial them and introduce error.

Does anyone have any recommendations for scope brands that tend to track reliably? Or, if I'm just being ridiculous worrying about this, let me know.

Re: Horus Alternative

I have two USO's that I have tested, both track perfect. I have not got around to testing my other scopes yet....

I would like to print off a graph that subtends at like 10 yards that I can test at. Testing at 100 sucks... LOL Wonder how hard that would be?

Re: Horus Alternative

Same,Same for the USO.

Just did a tracking test yesterday and every thing worked out perfect.

Oh yea check out the MPR @ USO, lots of info for hold overs both Elev.and Wind ,you r pick.
