How about a .280?

I would like to have a flat and fast cartridge. I would be hunting Ar. whitetail and I have hopes of going muley or elk hunting one day. I'm thinking of a short barreled rem700 setup in a htg stock. I don't NEED a new rifle, I just have an itch for one. I already have a couple .308's and a 25.06 sendero. What do ya'll think about the 280, and can you run one with a 20 or 22 inch barrel?

Re: How about a .280?

What action are you considering running it from? If you can run the AI version of the 280 you will have something that will run with just about any 7mm up to the 7WSM before it's going to lose any serious ground for range and punch.

The 6.5-06 and 6.5-06 AI is a great flat shooting round that the 6.5-284 was born to emulate.

The barrel life on the 280 will be better. I'm thinking about building one in a mauser action. I haven't decided if I want to run a 284 or a 280 AI.

FWIW, the 264WM has a barrel burning reputation. Factory ammo was loaded with double diameter bullets to help with throat erosion. I thought about it some too, it's supposed to be a freakin' laser

Re: How about a .280?

I love 280 and I love .280AI even more. I have two .280s and an Ackley pictured below. Its a long way from what you're talking about at close to 18 pounds and a 27 inch barrel but I thought I'd share. If it were me and I wanted a 22 inch barrel, I think if I had a short action I'd do a 7mm08 Ackley and never look back, otherwise I'd stick to a standard 280 for sure. The 7-08AI is pretty impressive with bullets in the 120 -140gr range. It would probably handle a 150 well too. My other 280s both have 22 inch barrels and they produce for me every year but I only hunt deer with them. I have other guns for other game. I just think 7-08AI would be a perfect deer gun. If Elk is on the list of things to do and you must use this same gun, I'd stick with the .280 and good bullet 150grs and up.
