How do you pick glass for your traininer?

I realize this might really belong in the optics forum since I'm asking about glass. However, I'm more interested in how the folks here with a .22lr trainer pick their glass?

I have my CMP 40X in and I'll need to order a rail and some mounts. My rifle right now is a bone stock 700 SPS-V in .308. It will soon be living in an AICS chassis. It currently has a 4-14x Falcon mil/mil.

I suppose in an ideal world, I would put another Falcon on here but I'm not real certain I want to drop more $$ into my trainer. Ideally, I'd like to upgrade my glass on my 700 and then move the Falcon over to the trainer. Tax season will determine how fast this happens.

So, how are you guys picking glass for your trainer? Are you biting the bullet ( pun intended ) and matching between the two or are you stepping down a bit for the trainer?

I have easy access to a 300 yard range but I really don't see myself shooting a .22lr at 300. I imagine most of it will be at 100 or most likely 50. I suppose I'm not terribly concerned about elevation adjustments.

I appreciate your advice and experiences.

Re: How do you pick glass for your traininer?

I just bought my first Nightforce for my LTR. While I'd love one for my rimfire, it aint happening.

I put a Super Sniper on the 40X and am quite happy with it. I picked the SS because I already had it. Actually the base, rings, and SS were all pulled off a rifle I sold so I didn't have to buy anything for the CMP rifle.

No matching here, either. I originally had a 3-9x32, then upgraded to the Mueller APV (4.5-14x40) after reading a multitude of excellent reviews about it. Currently thinking about changing to the Mueller APT (4.5-14x40) for the mil-dot reticle and the "tactical" knobs.

Re: How do you pick glass for your traininer?

My Ruger 10/22 currently has McMillan HTG/A1 stock and Leupold Vari-X II 3-9x40 riflescope with mil-dot reticle and target turrets. For the Remington 40X HB .22lr rimfire trainer I have coming, I will also get a McMillan HTG stock, but I will go with a Leupold MKIV riflescope instead (because that's exactly what I have on my TBA M40A1).

Re: How do you pick glass for your traininer?

I will be throwing on the Falcon that I have laying here, because I don't have the cash for another SN-3 right now.

Ideally I would put a SN-3 on it.

Really I think the "feel" and trigger pull are more important than duplicating the sight picture. The ballistics are not the same and the holds won't be the same, so I don't think I am going to be at a disadvantage if my reticle doesn't match.

Re: How do you pick glass for your traininer?

It will get a donar Falcon. The robbed 260 which was waiting for a NF will likely get a Razor and is the real priority. If not for that, I'd get another SWFA 3-9 SS. I think that would be a great fit for a .22 trainer.

Re: How do you pick glass for your traininer?

I want to just try and match features. Milling reticle, mil knobs, FFP, etc. Power level can be lower, because let's face it you won't be taking .22 out to the same ranges, nor will you be shooting the same sized targets at those ranges.

When I get my rifles setup I'm planning on an SN-3 on my primary and an SWFA 3-9 on my trainer.

I would very much like to get the SS 3-9x. It has everything I want in a scope (tactical knobs, mil/mil reticle and the perfect range for a 17HMR), but I can't seem to justify a $600 scope for a rifle that cost only $350.

Then throw it in a Larue mount and use it on a couple different $350 dollar rifles

Re: How do you pick glass for your traininer?

Thanks for the replies guys. It's always good to know what others are doing.

I want to mirror my 700 as much as possible. I'm just not sure I can bring myself to put a badger bolt knob on my 40X or if I can really justify the AICS chassis for it. I'll chat up Adam @ MHSA and we'll have to see.

It is sweet to have a piece of history. I can't wait to shoot this puppy.

Hopefully I'll be upgrading glass on my 700 and the 40X will be sporting the Falcon. If not, maybe I can find a SS on sale.
