In the last few years ive been getting bored with standard PT, Running, Rucking, and lifting, and have been taking up a variety of other hobbies to keep me active.

I enjoy road biking frequently, mountain biking some times, lap swimming in pools, and i recently got into rock climbing at a local indoor gym.

The rock climbing is fantastic strength and endurance training, also makes you more flexible I think.
The Road biking is great endurance training and a great fat burned. Swimming is great to do when its too hot to really bury yourself in a workout outside.

Id like to get into open water swims in lakes too. That will probably be next.

On a side note it was funny being in iraq last year. The ODA I was working with was doing fun viking type workouts like throwing cinder blocks as far as they could, or pulling tires strapped to wheel chairs, or taking a really heavy long handled hammer and pounding on a tractor tire all day. Fun workouts that worked.

Anyway what do you guys do to stay in shape?

Re: how do you PT to stay in shape?

sled dragging, HIIT training, occasional runs, prowler pushing, jump rope, occasional cardio machine session, barbell complexes, pushups/chins/dips/bodyweight circuit conditioning work.....are what i do for general physical preparation.

i also do power lifting/strength based weight training

We always joke around that Crossfit is the scientology of the fitness world

Crosstrain, plyometrics, swim, bike, and run. Triathlon training. Its a newer hobby to me within the last 2 years. So far I love it, just hard to get the time with 2 kids under the age of 2.

Re: how do you PT to stay in shape?

I like to use the "SuperFit" program. It's really pretty simple...you have to drink cheap beer, eat lots of red meat and absolutely no shaving of body hair except the face (uniform regs you know). My friends and I came up with SuperFit on our last trip to Iraq...all of the Marines were drinking the CrossFit cool-aid (yes, I know it works) but we wanted something that was the polar opposite of CrossFit as a joke.

In all seriousness, you should try stand-up paddle boarding in the summer great workout and with all the lakes in WI plenty of places to do it.

Re: how do you PT to stay in shape?

I loved Crossfit when I was doing it. However, I overtrained and it resulted in Carpal Tunnel Syndrome. Have had both my wrists cut since. Great workouts and I like the ideology, but it will fuck you up if you don't do it right.

Now I run, bike, ruck, lift & do body weight workouts.

Re: how do you PT to stay in shape?

Mix my workouts between powerlifting, crossfit-type routines and sparring/grappling. To all the naysayers that think you can't have good muscle mass and still be in top cardio shape are full of shit or lazy. It just takes the right balance of discipline, diet and rest.

JMHO, simply having big muscles doesn't mean jack! It's far more important to be physically balanced and prepared for anything.

Re: how do you PT to stay in shape?

My former squadleader runs a CF gym. He was always a PT stud, he is even more so now. He used to lift heavy weights and run a lot. Now he just does crossfit and despises weight lifting. Just sayin.

There are a lot of badass athletes that do crossfit. I don't know however that doing crossfit will make you into a badass athlete.

Like that article I posted above reads, alot of the people that do crossfit who are in exceptional shape were actually in exceptional shape prior to ever hearing about crossfit.

If you take some lardass and throw him into the ringer in a cf gym however the real question is what are the measureable results?

Alot of people may get a lot of success from it, and a lot of badass people may really be into it. I just don't know that I buy all the hype.

I'm overly critical about just about everything though. Realisticially I just want to be able to squat 1.5x my bodyweight 5x5 times and I'll be happy.

I ride the road bike quite a bit so I'm not so worried about my endurance.

Re: how do you PT to stay in shape?

Junk yard, tire recycling place, dump, construction equipment repair place or a site where they are replacing old tires. Check out the local NG depot. The big hauling trucks the Army uses has those tires. Not sure what they do with them when they need to be replaced.

Ahhh that's a great idea I'll ask a buddy over there and see what he comes up with hadn't even thought about that

We're moving into a house with backyard soon. Neighbors are going to love watching the Nordic games every other day hahahaha

Re: how do you PT to stay in shape?

I got a couple old tractor tires from a local farmer. They are not those ga-giant ones, but they work. They are a little easier to flip as well.

One of my favs is flip the tire 50M, pick up the sledge, beat it 25 times and flip the tire back to the start point. Rinse and repeat...

I also use a big ass timber. Don't know the weight of it, but flip it end over end a few times and it will own you.

Sledge to big tire is an awesome movement! We do interval training with that. Go 30 secs alternating swings, 30 secs rest, 30 secs flipping the tire, 30 secs rest, 30 secs alternating swings, so on and so on..........

Great ass kicker!!

Re: how do you PT to stay in shape?

P90X - great workout for me and for cardio - long distance bicycling with Elliptical in between. I don’t run after the Army as they dicked up my knees bad enough.

As for me, I surf to stay in shape. I'm still trying to figure out what shape that is though.

I hate working out to just work out with a passion. I have to be having fun or else I won't do it now that I'm out of the Army and don't "have" to do PT.

Re: how do you PT to stay in shape?

I try to do the sationary bike then go to my own kind of circuit training with little time to rest between stations. The only problem I have is that I could lay down after the last station and go to sleep for about an hour or longer. How do I train my body to not "crash" when I'm finished?

Back off the intensity, drink more water while exercising, eat carbs before and during the workout, follow with protein...

and rest! Rest will be the most beneficial thing to your workout.

Re: how do you PT to stay in shape?

Not eating before or after a workout puts your body into survival mode and saves fat. It can also lead to a depletion of essential sugars in the blood and make you faint. Not a good thing.
smile.gif

as far as rest: between stations isnt bad, but I meant after the work out. If cardio/fat burning is your goal, then lower weight/resistance and raise reps. It's imperative that you let your body rest. This doesn't particularly mean work out for a day and take the next off, just rest the body part or parts you worked the day before. Optimally you would allow 2 days between sessions per part. Give your body at least one day off a week.

Typical work out would be: Back/Bi's one day, Chest/tri's 2nd, legs 3rd day, rest 4th day, pick back up 5th day on back/bi's. You can either devote one day to cardio/abs or you can sprinkle it throughout with one big cardio day before your rest day.

Don't discount the benefits of body weight exercises i.e. push ups, pull ups, squats (proper form!), iron mikes ( walking lunges), and if sitting on the wall with the legs at a 90* angle. Some call the last one torture when you make arabs do it, but it's perfectly fine for the US Army to inflict on young men.

Another thing people overlook to avoid injury is stretching.

My personal opinion is people shouldn't lift weights until they can lift their own body. But I hate gyms and jockish meat heads so I'm probably in the minority on this.

Re: how do you PT to stay in shape?

Also, as far as diet, this plays a major role.

Carbs should be a healthy form..not potato chips.

After workout protein is best with something like Salmon with a salad or chicken (not fried).

Fish is your best friend on so many levels.

Re: how do you PT to stay in shape?

Another thing that totally skipped my mind:

If you are truly crashing after a workout, you might want to see a doctor and get tested for early onset of diabetes or something. It's generally not heard of to crash after workout unless it was super intense or you have something medically askew. I am not sure what you mean by "crash" so, take that with a grain of salt.
