Rifle Scopes How does zero stop work

I'm trying to decide if I need the zero stop feature on a new scope. From the videos I've watched on youtube it looks like it prevents any elevation adjustment in the downward direction. Is this true? I guess the principle behind that is you shouldn't need to adjust elevation in the downward direction? What does this do to the total MOA your scope is adjustable to? Say the scope travels a total of 100 MOA (50 in each direction). If my zero stop is set after dialing 5MOA do I now only have 45MOA in the upward direction and 0MOA in the downward direction?

Thanks for the help!

Re: How does zero stop work

your zero stop is there in the event that you ever lose wehre you are in elevation. if you get "lost" (a turn or more out) return to zero and get back in the game.

there is something to be said for having 1-1.5 mil below your hard zero for "roll over shots" if you want to dial instead of hold.
