How far do 300 grain Bergers like being off the lands?

I picked up 200 to load for my 338 Lapua Improved to take prairie dogging. It is a single shot and I can seat them long, just wondering how close they like to be to the lands?

Mine all like them .020 Jammed.

I am run them .030 off the lands with a COAL length of 3.760. That seemed to be the sweet spot for my AI. But every rifle is just a little different. I am also looking at the new Sierra 300 gr Matchking with the .768 BC.

I've found good nodes at .010" off and at .060" off and in between. They are very tolerant.

I loaded 15 at .015 off to start, I have about 1500 rounds of 300 SMK seated .010 off lands through the gun. Anxious to see a few groups at 500 yards!

Not sure that round is big enough for prairie dogs.....

It is if you stay within 100 yards. After that, the .338 really loses energy.

Reporting back:

100 grains Retumbo (my standard load with SMKs that produces 3010 fps) was around 2940 fps.
.015" off lands
1/2"ish at 100 yards, two groups at 400 yards averaged 1.5"

Will report back if they are enough to take down some doggies
