I have only been able to shoot out to 100 yards with the below set up and will be shooting this weekend at further distances (650yrds). I do not have a chronograph and am wondering what i should use for my bullet velocity in the "Shooter ballistic app"

Rifle:Remington 700sps AAC - .308 cal / 20" barrel / 1:10 twist
Ammo: Factory Federal 175gr SMK (labeled 7.62 x 51, not .308)

I have plugged in 2550 fps, does anyone have any data on this setup?

Re: How Many Feet Per Second

I would say with cool ammo (not in the sun) on about a 60* day Id go with 2500 fps. Our work guns with match ammo but 24 inch barrel throw 'em at about 2580. Those 20 inch barrel AACs do pretty good with any ammo (still barrels) used to have one, good gun.

Re: How Many Feet Per Second

If you're using Shooter ballistic app, just go out and shoot. Start by using 2500 FPS for your velocity and shoot to five known distances. Record each correction at the different yardages. Then under the Table tab you'll see the box with arrow in the top right corner. Under that tab is Velocity Calibration. Select it and enter the yardages and MOA or Mil correction for each yardage. Hit Calculate and then Use MV. It will automatically adjust to the correct MV. I use this even after running rounds through a chrono. It's extremely accurate and easy.

Re: How Many Feet Per Second

I use Shooter as well and have used the velocity calibration. Just be sure to get very good data at each distance. I didn't have anyone to spot for me so it was a bit difficult to know exactly where my rounds hit on already chewed up steel at 250, 500, and 750 yards. Even so after putting in my data I took it out to 1000 using the calculated data and it was only a little bit off.

Re: How Many Feet Per Second

My 20" .308 pushes 175 SMK factory ammo at an average of 2,550 fps. That was in cold temps, low to mid 30's, but at 7,500' ASL. FWIW, YMMV.
