Folks, I have sort of a different question for you guys (especially those of you in medical fields).

My cousin has a nerve condition and is on a shit-ton of pain meds. The meds are decreasing his appetite and he has lost a lot of weight. When he does eat, he eats like a horse, but it is not often enough and he is losing a dangerous amount of weight.

Are any of you familiar with a natural supplement or remedy that might increase his appetite? OTHER than cannabis, of course, since WY doesn't allow medical pot (please don't start in on political shit about it, I don't make the laws). If it were up to me, i'd move him to CO and get on it... but it's not.

I would greatly prefer sending him something natural as opposed to his docs having to add yet another scrip to his regimen or reduce his medications (which is a shitty alternative because of the nerve pain).

Let me know if you have any ideas. Thanks.

Re: how to increase appetite?

my advice would be a very light protein shake...such as 1 scoop of isopure every few hours...8ounces of liquid with all the nutrients is only 2 swallows away....

they have this supplement too...its likely bullshit though..

http://www.damuscle.com/p/CL09

you might also want to consider ala, nac, milk thistle...anything to help cleanse the liver, or shuttle nutrients...

Re: how to increase appetite?

Often overlooked or forgotten is injectable B12. This always helps increase my appetite when bulking trying to consume 5000-6000+ calories a day. It works, but like I said it needs to be injectable. You will not see the same results with just the B12 capsules that you swallow.

A small can of regular or high protien Ensure is a good source of calories and nutrients and is small and easy to get down in 2-3 drinks.

"Hey bench, how is that b12 from TSC working?"

"Great! My ears are growing like craz.. EEEEEEE-HAWWWW, EEEEEE-HAWWWWW!"

Re: how to increase appetite?

You'd be surprised how closely regulated/QC'd "vet" grade chemicals are in comparison to human grade products. Your B12 from Tractor Supply is safe.

Re: how to increase appetite?

Thanks folks, I Really appreciate the advice & keep it comming!

*I will, of course, have his parents ask the doc to be sure it is OK with his medications before trying it out. Pending that answer, i'll try to persuade them to start injectable b12.

Re: how to increase appetite?

My advice to you is from a long career in medicine and surgery of observing medicated and over medicated patients. Make him an appointment and then take him to the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN. Those folks don't make money from "oh so many" repetitive visits. They are on a fixed payment plan. They talk together about their patients. They are the EXPERTS in their fields. And, as I said, they communicate. I wouldn't be surprised if he isn't off most of his meds, and is much better after the consult and treatment. JMHO

Re: how to increase appetite?

I want his parents to take him to Boston, since one of the most world renowned specialists for his condition is there, along with a huge research program on the subject.

However, I'm meeting a brick wall on that, as his parents are fucking douchenozzles. And I say this from a lifetime of experience, I grew up with his mother and she's been one rung above the bottom her whole life. They have excellent insurance, and plenty of opportunity, there is no fucking excuse for these people other than pure selfishness.

In the mean time, b12 is something that they might agree to. Thanks.

What's his age?
Can he work out, or would that aggravate his condition?
My experience from a traumatic amputation of 1/3 of a foot in the offshore oilfield when I was a kid is that pain medication numbs the hunger senses. Also, it interferes with the peristaltic activity of the digestive tract and the bowels don't move naturally. Long term pain meds is bad news.

I think former naval person has the best news I've heard on this subject.

Re: how to increase appetite?

Casey, he's 16. He is very active when he can be, but the cold weather right now really exacerbates the chronic pain so it's worse in winter. He does several different martial arts when he feels good enough, and used to wrestle on the high school team but can't anymore due to the condition worsening. I think there are days that he uses the treadmill for exercise, but I don't know how often he feels up to it.

What you describe about the pain meds is pretty much in line with what he is experiencing. They've got this kid on more shit than I can pronounce without biting my own tongue in the process. I would like them to do what FNP said and see some other folks, but every time it comes up there is major resistance. I don't understand why, I think it's sadistic not to get your kid the help he needs when you have the resources.

I'm gonna try to get them to start b12 though if docs OK it. I don't want to kill him off with a drug reaction or something.

Re: how to increase appetite?

Im pretty sure that you cant get the large doses of injectable b12 at Tractor supply anymore

Re: how to increase appetite?

Cool, because of his youthfulness and intervals of wellness I'm hoping he might weight train, unless that aggravates his condition. Weight training spurs my appetite and might his too.
Meanwhile he might consider a heaping tablespoon of flaxseed meal on cereal or in a shake as an excellent natural laxative with omega 3 and 6. It makes me regular and might him too. Moving the bowel regularly might help with the appetite matter. Come to think of it, yogurt might also help.
Does he suffer from fibromyalgia?
