Sidearms & Scatterguns how to make your own kydex stuff.

Re: how to make your own kydex stuff.

thats about where i'm at, nobody makes anything for the HK expert, and i have a couple custom 1911's coming that will need special holsters... if you add up 3-4 holsters its worth it to make your own and buy all the tools to do it.

Re: how to make your own kydex stuff.

Anybody heard of any heat related issues on the guns with polymer frames? (Glock, SA, SW etc)

The higher end companies have lead molds but some use rings blue guns but havnt seen anything on using the actual polymer frame firearm for the molding process.

30$ is cheap for a blue gun of your gonna make alot them. Im just curious.

I wouldn't worry about it. As soon as it goes into the press, it's cooling down. I wouldn't put the Glock in the oven with it, but the temp the kydex comes out of the oven isn't going to hurt it.

Now if you were doing production every day it may be a problem.

Re: how to make your own kydex stuff.

Very good post. I've always thought about trying to make one for my G34 with the rail mounted lasermax.

I'm big on DIY projects but I've got crap left over all over the place from stuff I've only done once.

Re: how to make your own kydex stuff.

Just knocked my first attempt out tonight:

This was done with a press from Knifekits.com that I picked up a couple months ago. I also purchased the Tek-Lok and the coyote kydex from them.

Just so there is no "miscommunication". I am not selling kydex stuff right now. This is just me goofing around. It's not an ad, a sneak peek or anything else that would be reason for someone to report this post.

Re: how to make your own kydex stuff.

Looks really nice John.

I made a belt clip for my shot timer last week with a heat gun and a pair of heavy gloves. I doubt I'm in danger of being accused of advertising lol.

I figured as much. perhaps sandwiching a sheet of tinfoil on either side of the gun would be sufficient to eliminate any potential heat damage and it would still allow for a sharp mold

Where do I send money to?

Just the basic bench model press? Was it worth the price, in your opinion?

Re: how to make your own kydex stuff.

80$ or so isn't really that bad for the press Imo. Alot of guys make their own out heavy mdf but I think its easier just to get the correct tool from the get go.

Good info. Thanks.

Re: how to make your own kydex stuff.

I am sure he was joking. I just used a utility knife to score it, then snapped it. When finishing it out I used the score and nibble with pliers technique. It worked fine.

You end up with a little white color on the edges from stressing the kydex. If you run a lighter over it, it will go away and give you a little bit of a burnished type edge.

Reading through that whole thread, it appears that some of the guys have had problems with mashing the fames on Glocks or M&P's to the point mags won't drop free. Good thing I have a Rings Bluegun for my G21.

Re: how to make your own kydex stuff.

Just a reminder, but Natchez Shooting Supply has a ton of the Eagle/G-Code kydex accessories like the paddles, quick disconnect pieces, belt loop pieces, etc. The prices are crazy low for the Eagle stuff.

Re: how to make your own kydex stuff.

You can get all of the equipment you need to make decent stuff for the price of what a Kaluban or Raven kydex holster and double mag holster would cost. The press and rivet setter are about the only real expenses.

I've made a ton of Glock holsters from Kydex and there's no reason to cover the pistol with tin foil or anything else. the Kydex will never be hot enough to warp/damage the polymer in the pistol frame. I don't use an oven to warm the Kydex, I use a heat gun as it gives me a lot more control over the material. I warm the sheet to make kind of a taco shell. them warm each side til it's almost to hot to touch and throw it in the press and lock it down. come back in 15 minutes and it's ready for grinding/final fitting.

i got the large press several years ago. the small one will do any project you can come up with even if you have to do it in steps. i got the large one just in case i do any more really large knife sheaths.
