Rifle Scopes How to tell if an optic is used?

Just got my NightForce in. Haven't mounted it yet but compared to the Leupold MRT 1.5-5, it's not really that impressive. I'm probably just being paranoid, but I think the optic I received maybe was a display model? Or not new? I purchased this listed as NEW on eBay from an authorized NightForce dealer. Upon opening the box up, the Nightforce is dusty.

There's a sticker on it that said it passed inspection 8/12/10, so now I'm wondering if it sat on a shelf for a year, or was it a display model? Probably even used? I inspected it and found only one mark along the tube.

The flip up lens cover I received with the NightForce is made out of cardboard. I thought there would be something under the cardboard like a plastic layer, but nope, I removed the cardboard and then all I saw was the optic glass. This had me going WTF since the Leupold I had, at least had better lens caps.

On the cardboard of the lens caps it says : IMPORTANT Read directions for replacing lenses, then remove protective film from both sides of lenses.

I read through the manual and all the papers included and it says nothing about this.

I'm probably being paranoid, but I like to get what I pay my hard-earned money for, if anyone gets my drift. A new NightForce optic.

Thank you for your information and help.

Re: How to tell if an optic is used?

Hmmm, sounds used to me; or at least like you suspect, a display model. The point is you paid a price for what you thought was a new scope. Seller didn't advertise "used" or "demo" in which you would have probably expected to pay a lower price than for a new one.

I've never bought a Nightforce so I don't know how they come packaged, but I'll bet someone with more Nightforce knowledge will tell you that it's not like what you received.

Contact the seller and send it back as "not as advertised"... then get a new one like you want.

All the NF scope I have all came with rubber bikini covers not flip ups. You could call NF and check the serial number to see where and when it was originally sold, and go from there.

The compact models come with flip ups like he said. I remember the instructions on mine (new from nightforce) said something like that. I don't remember there being any cardboard on it though. In any case, the caps suck and butler creeks are better.

Re: How to tell if an optic is used?

The flip ups on the NSX Compacts have see thru polarized lenses. There is a brown paper anti scratch sticker on each side of the lens. Unless yours has been messed with, this is what is going on.

I agree the flip ups suck, butler creeks are better.

Mount the scope, shoot it and have fun.
