So I am setting up a new .308 hunting rig, mainly deer, hog and plinking. I have yet experienced the thrill of expensive glass, but on this rig I will pony up. I am fairly new to hunting, I have hunted fowl and hog but never with my own rig, so I am new to that regards.

I am looking into the $1500 range for a scope and I am wondering, if FFP is overkill? I will do some long range shooting, probably not hunting (maybe GH) so I am going to use a graduated reticle.

I was thinking about the NXS 3x15 but the price difference on FFP vs SFP is CRAZY.

Do I really need FFP? I mean for $2200 is the NXS better than say USO?

Re: Hunting scope

If 1500 is your limit I believe your limited to the sfp. Thats what I have and I love it. Every one is different, but I don't think you can go wrong. Others should post and give their oppinion.

What do you call time constrains? I'm planning to shoot :

- deer, no multiples,no time constrains
- hog, sometimes multiple, somewhat of time constrains
- GroundHog (family) probably overkill with a 308 but I will try GH's at long ranges 600+ yards, multiples, no time constrains
- target shooting, yes to multiples, no time constrains

Thanks for the input guys!!

Re: Hunting scope

Nobody "needs" a FFP scope: choose whatever suits your fancy. If you are getting a scope for hunting only, you can do well with far less than $1500. I'd look at a Leupold VX-3. If you are hell bent on spending a lot of money on a hunting scope(definitely been there), I'd suggest a NF 2.5-10x32

Re: Hunting scope

You don't need an FFP scope, nor do you need high magnification. I'd consider a 3.5-10 with a duplex reticle plenty of scope for hunting. There are plenty to choose from pretty inexpensively. I don't do that kind of shooting, so I won't recommend a particular scope.

For that matter, more game has been killed with Weaver 4X scopes than any other.

Re: Hunting scope

If you want to experience a "tactical" style FFP scope with decent glass - try a SWFA 3-9x42 FFP with MilDot reticle. I will work fine for your applications. It will give a chance to use a FFP optic with a Mildot reticle. Hunting on 3x and Target shooting at 9x. A dependable optic for $600.
