I am in the process of building a new long distance deer rifle. I decided I was going to put a 5.5X22 NF NXS on the rifle. However recently I have been reading a good bit about the Huskemaw scope.

I have a few Swaro's and Zeiss scopes. And I like them. However I am wanting to stay American. And I am a bit disappointed in Leupold these days. So I decided to go with the Night Force scope.

The Huskemaw scope is a good bit less than the NF?? Is the NF worth the extra money over the Huskemaw?? Thanks, Tom.

Re: Huskemaw?? NightForce??

i should think.....if you are looking to anchor stuff at long distance glass would not be skimped on....have you EVER looked through a huskemaw......?

you may find your answer there

Re: Huskemaw?? NightForce??

I belong to a 1,000 yard club. It is about 5 minutes from my place. I have looked at the Huskemaw's, but not one mounted on a rifle at the range. We have a club member who has one, and he is going to bring it to the club and let me shoot his rig at 1,000. So I will have a better answer then.

I am upgrading from a Zeiss Conquest in 6.5X20 on my ground hog rig(22-250), to a new NF BR scope. So I will be buying 2 scopes at one time.

I am a handicapped person so carry weight will not be a real issue. All my hunting is from a fixed position. And I have actually considered a NF BR model for this deer rifle build.

I was really wanting other people's views on the Huskemaw. However I doubt very seriously if the clarity is as bad as "pond water". But then I guess I am a new guy here so I will have to take my turn in the barrel. Tom.

Re: Huskemaw?? NightForce??

I own a NF, but never worked with a Huskemaw, that is why I agree with boltripper that you should look through one first before you decide.

I only comment on gears I own, and/or experienced, so I can tell you that you will be happy with NF. Huskemaw, you will have to take the words from other folks here.

You do know that most NF scopes are not American made, right?

No I did not know that. I thought they were made in Idaho. If they are not American made then I will also look at getting another Swaro. Tom.

Re: Huskemaw?? NightForce??

Hoghead,
I own both a Huskemaw and a 5.5x22-50 NXS.
While the Huskemaw is not quite a Nightforce, it is an excellent scope with good clarity of glass. I have owned it for over a year, and it has tracted perfectly. It is also a pound lighter than my Nightforce. It has a good functional reticle with hashmarks on the horizontal if you want to hold off on your wind. I would not hesitate to buy another if I needed one. They just posted a review on them over at Longrange Hunting website. Take a read.

hoghead i am not trying to steer you wrong.maybe pond water was a little extreme. What i should have said is the clairty wasnt near as good as the nf.
I have a friend that has one.I have shot his rifle with it monted.his,(and yes maybe there was something wrong with it)scope was pretty cloudy around the edges.and the eye releif was very short. But on the positive side he also said it never failed to hold zero, and always returned to zero when clicking in ele....Hope this helps a litte more than pond water.....

Thank You.

This is going to be my first build for a big game rifle. I have had 2 varmint rifles built, and I knew exactly what I wanted when I built those rifles. However a big game rifle is a totally different beast. It seems like compromise is always at hand. I did not have a compromise problem with my varminter builds. Tom.

I did read that review. And I have done searchs on a few different forums. However there really isn't a lot of first hand information(like yours) out there. Thanks, Tom.

Re: Huskemaw?? NightForce??

Nightforce is clearer by a fair amount to my eye, My buddy in Mt would give you his arm before his Huskemay though, weight not being an issue NF would be my final decision. Welcome to the Hide and let us know your thoughts after you look through your buds.

The front focal plane and compact models are Made In USA. If there are others someone feel free to add them to the list, but most are made in Japan.

I am in no way saying they are not top quality scopes and only bring this up because you indicated you wished to buy American.

ETA: Have you considered a Premier Heritage?

Re: Huskemaw?? NightForce??

I watch "Best Of The West" all the time and have seen the videos. I met one of the dudes at the Texas Trophy hunters Show. The rifles are ROCK solid built around the excellent Stiller action. I looked through the scope, the reticle is nice. It is stricly a hunting scope as the dials are not "precicse" as the scopes we all are used to. The guy did say the scopes are made in Japan for them and the other guy, Aaron, installs the turrett system, kinda like the Leupold custom shop. You are "stuck" with whatever load you use because that's what the scope is set for. It looks like a Bushnell 4500 or 6500. I'll have to admit after watching the videos and TV shows, the system works.

BUT, I think with the time they take ranging the animals before they shoot, "we" would have plenty of time to glance at a ballistics card and dial in our dope. Most of you guys have that info in your head.

I'll keep my NXS but would love to see some first hand reports from hide memebers how the system works.

Good luck with your choice and keep us posted.

Re: Huskemaw?? NightForce??

Also so you know, all Nightforce scopes are assembled in the US but some with not enough US parts to be called made in the US. Nightforce would be considered a US company in my book as they have a good size employee base, make the compacts and F1s in the US and assemble the SFP 3.5-15 and 5.5-22 in the US by US workers. Good enough for me.

Re: Huskemaw?? NightForce??

Yes, some of the SFPs as they don't have enough US parts but they are assembled in the US.

Re: Huskemaw?? NightForce??

As to the ballistic drop tailored to your load, it is cool, it does work, and I have the same thing on my USO ( which is entirely made in the USA).

Yesterday, I lazed a target, dailed the distance and shot. First round hit, no math, no data card, just dail and hit (at 585 yards), pretty cool.

The caveat is that dope will change depending on temp, altitude, etc.

If you go that route, it will be a while until you develop a load that works for your rifle. You need to know this before you get the scope (so you can give them the data. If this is what apeals to you, USO is worth considering, they can get you a nother turret with different load data for 50 bucks.

Re: Huskemaw?? NightForce??

It seems like the only advantage I can come up with for the Huskemaw is the custom dial, but as others have said, you can contact Kenton Industries and they will custom make one for your NF for a little less than a $100. I would take the NF. It is more proven and I will be putting one on my next custom hunting rig which I am getting ready to start.

Re: Huskemaw?? NightForce??

Nightforce are as much US made as a Luepold, not to mention they make a product with equal or better CS, and are a far superior and robust product catering to what the shooting and profesional community wants.

One company is continually improving and innovating while one is relaxing, banking on a name their Grandfathers made for them.

Re: Huskemaw?? NightForce??

This works well also!!!!

That review is worth reading. I however, would be reluctant to lay down that kind of money for a new product from a new company. After a few years pass and the company builds a history it may be worth a closer look...

Re: Huskemaw?? NightForce??

I was told by a Best in the West representative at a show last year that Huskemaw gets there scopes from Nightforce. The dials nor the magnification knob match, but thats what the guy told me?
