I have several dozen gardener snakes that live in my backyard. I did not mind them until my wife found one in my house. Besides hunting these things down individually does anyone know of a good way of getting rid of them?

Thanks,

Re: I have a snake problem.

Cats, Egrets, Red Tailed Hawks, Ferrets, Mongooses, poisoned mice, bigger snakes...

Good luck! I have a spider problem I would gladly trade you!

Re: I have a snake problem.

Re: I have a snake problem.

Unfortunately I live in the western burbs of Chicago. The hawks hardly hunt in the yard and we generally lack decent predators. There are a couple of neighborhood cats but not enough to do any damage to the snake population.

I don't mind critters...when they stay outside. If they violate my living space they pay the price though.

Re: I have a snake problem.

nothing will get rid of snakes quicker then pigs. They love to eat snakes, they will clean them out in nothing flat.

Re: I have a snake problem.

The snakes indicate you actually have a bug problem, carpenter ants, flying spiders, whatever - they are there eating some bug in your yard that is about to explode...

After I sprayed for bugs, I haven't seen a snake one in 2 years except up at the neighbors house..

They do your yard more good than bad - tell the wife to accept either the big spiders, or the snakes because the snakes eat the spiders, and many many other bugs...

Your choice, bugs, or snakes..

I have a ton of spiders, crickets and ants. To go along with that I have a huge concrete patio to harbor them. I guess its time to fog the yard.

Re: I have a snake problem.

garter snakes do not eat bugs, go to gartersnake.com, im sure they have someone in the area that will help you out. they are harmless and really are very social reptiles once you get past the evil and dangerous part that is another perfect example of how stupid humans really are and how out of touch with nature they have become. good luck

True, and they eat lots of mice and stuff.

If you really want to get rid of them put mothballs around where they hang out. They cant stand the volitale naptha in the m. or cottonballs soaked ingasoline, but mothballs are safer. shouldnt take long.

Re: I have a snake problem.

I agree with what some have already said here. The presence of snakes usually indicates another problem.....rodents/pests. Would you rather rats with the Bubonic Plague in your house?

Take care of a snake's food supply and you will rid yourself of the snakes.

Personally, I'd prefer the snakes remain and continue to provide a free pest service without any danger to my family.

Re: I have a snake problem.

love the honey badger gig...

cant ever go wrong with having honey badgers around, right?

after all...

they dont give a shit...

Re: I have a snake problem.

I was gonna mention a honey badger. But shank and oneshot were faster on the trigger.
I bet one would take care of the snake and bug problem.

Re: I have a snake problem.

You may be screwed. There is a house just north of my AO that has been deemed "snake house" apparently there is a huge under ground nest near or under the home. Snakes are everywhere, (especially when it is cold) the walls, bed, shitter you name it. The house is uninhabitable there is so many snakes. Good luck.

REXBURG - Located at 675 W. 5000 North, a house is listed to sell, but there is more to this abode than meets the eye: It is infested with garter snakes.

The last owners of the home were Ben and Amber Sessions. They bought the house at what they thought was a great price.

"We were told that the previous owners in there didn't want to make their payment because they made up a story that there were snakes there, that they didn't want to pay their mortgage so they made up a snake story," Ben Sessions said.

The couple was also informed that every precaution was taken to ensure there wasn't a snake problem. They trusted the real estate agent that the information they had been told was true.

Later, the Sessions learned that the story of the snakes was not made up, and there was a problem.

The Sessions were forced to file for bankruptcy and the house was foreclosed.

The house is currently owned by Chase Bank, which contacted Todd Davis, listing specialist and associate broker from Realty Quest, to handle the selling of the foreclosed home. Realty Quest did not handle the sale to the Sessions.

This is the first experience Davis has had with the house and has not seen any snakes, as it is the hibernating season. He has heard about the home from others and is going to try to sell the home while making sure those inquiring are aware of the situation.

Davis had requested the bank to get the house inspected and find out what it would take to rid of the problem. The bank sent an inspector, who estimated in December there were about 400 to 500 snakes at the house. The latest assessment from the inspector is that there are multiple thousands of snakes.

The Sessions moved into the home in September 2009 and began to see snakes two weeks after they had moved in. At first, they thought maybe they were just stirring some snakes up because the house had been vacant for a year. They lived out in the country and expected to see some snakes.

After some time, the Sessions began to see more snakes. Amber Sessions saw eight snakes within a couple of days and decided to research the house a little more.

"I went online to find out what was going on. I typed in ‘Idaho snake house,' and there was a Channel 6 news report of the previous people that lived there, the Ards, and it was our house," said Amber Sessions.

Davis understands the snakes to be under the foundation of the house and Ben Sessions says he believes the snakes to be by the well because the water at the house tasted the same as the snakes smelled.

Garter snakes "secrete a foul-smelling fluid from anal glands when alarmed." (Click here for more.)

"From what we're told, the snakes actually leave a scent that attracts other snakes to the den for up to 2 miles away," Davis said.

The "snake house" has been listed for sale for 46 days, as of today, and Davis said that with each person inquiring, Realty Quest is making sure those interested are aware of the problem to their knowledge.

A YouTube video was posted by the owners before the Sessions (the Ards) of the snakes, and Davis is also e-mailing the link to inquirers. Davis said the YouTube video is the only true evidence of the snakes that he has seen.

The Sessions were on the Animal Planet television show, "Infested: snakes, spiders, and ants," but the video footage of the snakes is a reenactment of the situation.

"Everyone that we've been talking to, we've offered - the Sessions have said that they're willing to let people contact them - we're offering their phone number to them, as well as the pest inspector's phone number to them to try to make them as aware as possible," Davis said.

Davis estimated the house to be worth about $175,000 if it were not infested and it is currently listed at $109,200 because of the situation.

The house was remodeled about five years ago, and it is believed that is when the snakes got access to the home because it was exposed.

"We're not trying to minimize (the problem), we're not trying to sweep it under the rug," Davis said. "The minimal amount we would make in a commission is not worth destroying someone's life and what's happened to the Sessions. We feel terrible for them, it's simply, it sounds like they were the victims of misinformation, and we're trying to go 180 degrees the opposite direction with that."

Re: I have a snake problem.

There are multiple ways that are thought to work. Anything short of moving them or getting chemicals directly on them will not work. As stated above mothballs and gasoline are often used but when studying snakes and other herps in college we tested these myths. We found none of them to be effective.

Remove the food, remove the snakes.

Re: I have a snake problem.

This is my 15 year old daughter, show this to your wife..(The hand holding the snake is my dau ghter if anyone needs clarification)

Garter snakes are harmless, although they will bite and draw blood "occasionally" and only if you are picking them up - they want nothing to do with your wife as much as your wife wants nothing to do with them!

Oh yeah, and this is a bigger cousin that my daughter stumbled upon, apparantly pissed it off as my daughter took this from the picnic table - THESE snakes normally run but this one did not - freaked her out a bit..But live and let live -= she named it Henry and let it go..er, it let her go.

Probably the best, and cheapest method. Kingsnakes are King for a reason.

Then you buy a Red-tailed hawk. :p

Re: I have a snake problem.

+1 for Arcticlight's comment. In my area, rural folks sometimes host black snakes. They are there for the food supply- usually moles. Moles are there for the underground grubs.

Treat yard with an insecticide for grubs(available at big box stores) and no more black snakes. Same would apply to your snakes. If you cut off the food supply, they go elsewhere.

Re: I have a snake problem.

You see, the problem is she was giving the kids a bath. When she noticed something on the floor she kicked it. Now my wife gardens with these guys almost daily and doesn't mind them in the yard but next to the tub with the kids really is not her cup of tea.

I think that will be my first choice if the wife doesn't go for the king snake, red tail hawk, honey badger combo...she already said no to the pigs.

Re: I have a snake problem.

100% harmless, just a fact of life living where you live.

If one gets in , just chuck him outside.

I had a 500lb bear licking the table on my deck a few weeks back, you want to talk about a worried wife! Good thing it was a little one. Sometimes we cross paths with the indigenous wildlife, best bet is educate her and the kids.

Those snakes just eat worms, amphibians, and other little critters, completely harmless and good to have around. I had them all over my yard growing up, and they definitely want nothing to do with you or getting inside your house. That is a very rare situation, and will most likely not be a repeat problem.
You don't have any little boys do you? I ask because the only ones that made it inside our house were smuggled in by me or my little brother.

Re: I have a snake problem.

for real, pigs are hell on snakes. We have been whacking the piggies at a ferocious pace at the Man Camp - never have seen a snake in many years. The last year - five big rattlers. Yes the drought may have moved them around, but makes me think we ought to not shoot pigs around the house!

Mothballs smell better'n pigs too.

Re: I have a snake problem.

Ducks will eat snakes if small enought.spiders and anything that flys into rsnge, plus fertelize your yard.

Re: I have a snake problem.

+1 for king snakes. Make sure to seal off all crawl spaces underneath your house or foundation. I have heard horror stories about hundreds of thousands of garters making dens underneath homes and breeding non-stop until there is practically nothing you can do.
