Gunsmithing I need a barrel cut from 26" to 20" need a smith

Re: I need a barrel cut from 26" to 20" need a smith

You'll need a lathe. Pretty simple job for a local smith. Call around your area for time line and pricing. $80 would be a good price.

If you want to send it out to a known smith on the hide, look at Mark @ short action customs (see link). He may have quicker turn around, don't know that for sure though.

"T.J. Jackson chambered its Shilen Select Match Grade 8-groove barrel for a .050"-shortened version of the 22PPC. He also turned the outside of the barrel to ounce-saving dimensions which permitted an oversized #7 contour to be used without the rifle exceeding the weight limit for Light Varmint class. The barrel was cut to 21 3/4" and target crowned."

It was cut to 21 3/4 to make the weight limit for the LV class.

You have to read the whole thing grasshopper.....

"But no bit of information was, Virgil believes, more valuable than a little advice Jim Gilmore passed along. Jim said a barrel MUST be 21 3/4” long for optimum accuracy. That precise length, he stated, sets up a vibration pattern that duplicates well from shot to shot. Virgil faithfully followed that advice on his guns.

Anyone who strictly observes the 21 3/4" doctrine will screw off a failing barrel of that length and run a new one under it. Rechambering and rethreading, in order to achieve more pristine lands just forward of the throat, shortens the barrel. Shorten the barrel, spoil the magic length. "

The magical length had more to do w/ weight rather then anything else!

Ozzie from STR here on the hide has done several of ours and the work is first class. Plus the turn around time will be suprisingly fast. Suarez Tactical Rifles. 305-898-0163.

Fellows I come from the short range BR world. T.J Jackson was a good friend of mine. A true American hero, he flew U2's over the Soviet Union during the cold war. That article was written 25+ years ago. Go look at the agg's that are being shot today. Most rifles have shorter barrels. It's all about bullets and barrels. Yes you can change the harmonics of a barrel by shortening it but there is no magical length. Hell change bullet weight and you changed the harmonics. If you have a rifle that will shoot 5-5 shots groups and average under .200" then we can discuss barrel length.

It's nice to see experience here once in awhile. Well said David.

The smallest groups shot consistantly over a period of time in the 1000 yard BR game came out of a 30" Krieger and broke two World Records, won countless matches and screamer groups (under 4" at 1000 yards). If a barrel/load is tuned to it's magical harmonic spot it will shoot. This means trying different things like primers bullets powder charge and where the rifle sits on the rest or how it is held.
Dave,
Never thought I would miss the smell of chicken poop in the air. I miss those days.

Actually a good question, I have a Ruger MKII top I need shortened and the front sight re-installed.

He recently cut my 700P barrel down to 20" for me. He does great work and is newly engaged, so he needs the money... Hahaha. Seriously, Mark is my No. 1 go-to barrel guy, and as a bonus you can have him thread your barrel while it's on the machine.
