Man that Post struck a big nerve & thanks for bringing this up .
I been told the same thing as this, many times by my grandfather . Ret. Sgt.Maj. Jay Brown . ( he is also still alive ) . They marched them out to different down-range areas near the A bomb Blast Area . Crouching in dugout foxholes & trenches and were told to cover themselves with the old-school OD green wool issue blankets & put there hands over there eyes & don't get up or watch till ordered to . He said ..." He could see the bones in his hands ". after that fucker Popped-Off, felt the blast wave rush over his head & felt the Heat wave .
These were the early & DIRTY hot bombs . The Gov. claims ignorance . But uncle sugar just went along with those dirty fuckers and used it's employes as human Lab Rats .
He has cancer but has been fighting for years & old age will be his death & it wont get him . Cant say that for his buddies they are all dead . Jay Brown is a hard motherfucker, Went-in @ 17 year old . server 2-Korea in Korea & 6-tours in Vietnam . who chose to & refused promotion to retire as Sgt.Mag. . I got MUCH respect for him and he definitely made a positive influence in formation of my early years .

He told me 'few' of some grizzly shit happened in combat & I am positive short of the worst facts . & I asked him once " Why ? ". He volunteered to go back to Nam. to finish 6 Tours ?
