It’s always nice to be humbled every now and then. This past weekend I was humbled twice and was given reason to think, give thanks and reflect!
I went to the ranch for a weekend of dove hunting something I haven’t done in almost 35 years. The old rancher with his place adjacent to mine asked me if I would mount his new scope and help him sight in his rifle. Absolutely I replied. He purchased a $79.99 Pentex 3X9 from Midway USA with their form of a ballistic plex. We mounted the scope on his old .243 Remington Mohawk with 18” barrel and open sights still on it. He brought a long a couple of plastic belt clips of some factory ammo though he didn’t know what bullet type, weight or brand he was shooting…nor did he care!
Our first shot at 100 yards was 6” right and 3” low. The scope said it was .25 moa so I made the adjustments and he took the next shot. Just a hair below the “X” on the target. He shot once more and his second round landed just to right of the last shot with approx a 1/16th of inch separating the two shots. Wow I thought. Then he asked me to shoot it twice. My two shots were touching his two shots. All told it shot about .75 moa for four shots from some unknown type of ammo.
He then asked me to shoot it at my 200 and 300 yard range targets so we could see how far off the reticle are at each range. Each shot minus the wind was pretty much right on with the 200 and 300 yard cross hairs on the Pentex scope. The scope image was crisp and clear all the way to the edges. I set there very humbled looking at this old timer’s rig that could out shoot a lot of custom rifles I’ve seen and he probably didn’t have $350.00 total in the whole rig. It just goes to show you don't need to spend a ton of money for a great shooting rifle! Laugh if you want but I wouldn’t want to be a deer in his cross hairs this season.
OK so I said I tried dove hunting after 35 years. Again I stood in the dove fields humbled because “I SUCK” and I SUCK bad at this sport. I did manage to shoot down 4 doves with 3 boxes of shells but only found one. I had a ton of fun but realized like most sports you just don’t pick up a shotgun and head to the fields with doing some kind of practice. Oh well next weekend I’ll give it another try…worst I can do is spray the sky’s full of lead like this past weekend.
