Man charged after using gun on bat that "attacked" his wife

CLOSE [X] Last update: August 24, 2010 - 6:16 AM

A Maplewood man found out the hard way that when it comes to getting rid of vermin, a gun probably is not the best choice -- particularly when the critter is in your house.

By the time he was done shooting, a bat was wounded and an adjoining vacant townhouse had three bullet holes in its freshly painted walls, a dent in a metal closet door and a dent in More.. the stove, according to charges filed Friday in Ramsey County District Court.

As a result, Cedric R. Newton, 52, has been charged with reckless discharge of a firearm, a felony. He will make his first court appearance Sept. 20.

The charges said Newton used a .38-caliber revolver to get rid of the bat last month.

A Maplewood police officer was sent to the 2300 block of Loudin Lane on July 25 to speak with the property manager, who showed the officer the damage, the complaint said.

When police talked to Newton, he said that about midnight on July 24, a bat had come into his home and "attacked" his wife, the complaint said. Newton said he got his gun and fired several times at the bat, eventually wounding it.

"Newton told police that he had the presence of mind to have his wife go upstairs while he shot at the bat, but apparently gave no consideration to the surrounding townhomes," the complaint said.

No one answered the phone Monday afternoon at the Newton home.

I shot one off the ceiling of the laundry room once with a 38 snubby and rat shot. Hardly tore the paper on the sheetrock. Nothin a little spackle didn't fix. Worked great! Dead bat. I don't mind bats, just not in the house.

A year or two ago, here in MO, we had a guy trying to run TV coax into his home. Seems the best way he could think of was to fire a round (.22 I think) through through the wall and pass the coax through the bullet hole...except his wife was standing on the other side. Shot and killed her. It was ruled an accident, but...c'mon!

Re: Idiot shoots at bat in home

We've had a lot of them in our house. 3 years ago I killed 5 or 6 in one year. That was the year the wife made me bat proof the house. Haven't had one inside since. Though I do hear them in the ceiling. Caught one in the furnace filter once.

Tennis racket and a couple of beers while waiting for them to "fly by" works pretty well.

Was told, many years ago, that if you use a BB gun; the bat will think it is a bug coming at it. Hover to get the bug and the BB will go in the bats mouth and take out the back of its head. Like I said "told" never tried to do it so have no idea if it works or not.

Re: Idiot shoots at bat in home

I've got six bat houses I put up around the yard. There's probably 100 of the little boogers flying laps around my house right now. Maybe that's why I got NO MOSQUITOES!

A buddy of mine is deathly afraid of snakes. He once shot a snake that had got into his house with a FMJ 8mm (he was cleaning his Mauser at the time). The bullet was stopped by the block of his push mower, which was in an outdoor storage shed. On it's way, it had passed through three walls and a floor.

Good thing his nearest neighbor was so far away, they couldn't hear the shot.
