IMR 4064 and 175gn SMK. Max Pressure

I would like to get yalls take on 4064 since varget and 8208 are impossible to find right now. Have yall loaded with these often and whats your max charges.

The powder has worked for Decades with that bullet. I ran 178 ELDMs and it worked great. Pages of load data here and else where for you to review.

I've used it for a while, but stayed below 42.9 gn of 4064. but now that sierra updated their books its looking like i would be able to go higher. I am trying to get a consensus of what people have gone up to.

It does not matter what people have "went up to." It matters what your gun will "go up to." You want to know how much powder before you reach pressure signs load up a pressure test.

VSP had a great idea to put this up as a Sticky. Since we get SO many questions about this, this will aid everyone( esp Noobs) on a good load. Please list ALL components, twist, barrel mfgr,length, neck tension. Since we know changing any variable will alter the ultimate outcome.

IMO, Max pressure doesn't matter. What matters is what amount of grains is the magical combo for you rifle.

You should find a magical spot between 41.5 and 42.5gr.

I shot a lot today f 43 grains IMR 4064 with 175 SMK’s. Lapua cases. Long case life.

To your point, brass varies the charge about .3 grains in going from Winchester to LC or Federal with Winchester having the higher capacity.

I've loaded IMR4064, 175SMK, and Lapua brass up to 45C grains. I did have pressure signs, but not much. IMR lists the max load with Winchester brass as being 45.6C grains. I think you might find 42 grains shoots to a "gold match" level.

Sounds about right. I have loaded to the 45+ level in my R700 with Win brass but that rifle has about a 100yd freebore! I wouldn't recommend loading anywhere near there.

Like everyone else. 42.0 gr. 4064 175 SMK is a truly classic load.

I would try the recommended loads that others have found to be the "sweet spot" in their rifles. A ladder test may refine this for you and varying your primers can make a big difference.

Depends on the lot, but it should be in the low to mid 2600’s.

In a 24" barrel I am getting 2650ish in a 20" 2580 fps.
