Imr 4064

Hello,

I have a batch of IMR 4064 on order and the sierra 175 SMK bullets as well. I know what the recipe is for 7.62 brass but for the 308 winchester brass what would i have to reduce the powder charge by?

Start 41.5 max 45.5.....low node around 42 grains in heavy brass...believe higher node between 43-44 gr in winny brass..hope this helps....btw...u will b pleased with the accuracy of this load....one of my favorite powders for .308..

4064 is my go-to powder. 45.5 seems a bit high for my rifle (Savage 10 FCP-SR), but I have to seat the 175s considerably shorter than most. I usually run right at the 43gr mark and it's a tac driver. Also, keep in mind whether or not you are FL sizing or just neck sizing. If just neck sizing, you'll see a difference in case capacity (larger amount).

What rifle?
In my Rem 700 LTR I ran Win/Blackhills brass 210M's and 175's with 44.3 grains of 4064 and the bullet seated out to single loading length ie the lands in a Remington chamber.

One of my best 190 SMK loads was with 4064. Sub half inch at 100 at around 42gr.

M24 clone rifle is what the loads are for.

My rifle is chamberd for 7.62 but i safely can fire and have fired both 308 and 7.62 out of it.

Sorry to derail for a second, but GhostFace what do you think about the 178 BTHP compared to the SMK? I doubt I would notice a difference in accuracy at my current skill level, but I'm curious if you have noticed a difference.

Accuracy is good but I don't think there is a difference between the two until about 650 and out, the 178 BTHP flies flatter

I have been using IMR4064 with 175/178s in my FN SPR A1 since a friend sold me a keg for cheap. Works great in the 43-44gr range.

My load is:
FN SPR - 24" with 1-12 twist
Nosler .308 brass (~164gr)
Win LR primer
43.5gr IMR 4064
2.85" COAL
178 BTHP/175SMK/175CC

Averages right around 2700fps with all three bullets and good accuracy. The 178s seem to shoot just fine in this rifle with a bit of jump.

4064 was a favorite for lots of years, then RL-15 and Varget kinda entered the picture. Both are great choices, but I still use a lot of 4064. Lightman

4064 is a great powder for 308 the only problem is it meters like spaghetti through my Redding 3BR.

I am considering for the precision ammo to get a electronic scale. I know accuracy is all about repeatability so i am thinking a electronic scale would be a good idea to get the pet load at max performance.
