I am running 140gr .277 cal in my 270WSM, with the shortages around lately I ended up with 2 lbs of IMR4064 but can not find RL22. I was running 64 of RL22 and getting 3130 MV. Looking in Nosler #5 it shows 300WSM with IMR4064 60.5gr max. Also for the 300WSM it shows IMR4350 as 67.5 max and RL19 as 69.5 max. With the 270WSM for the 150gr it lists IMR4350 as 58gr max and RL19 as 60.5 max.

Is there a realative way to find a baseline for the IMR4064 in my 270WSM? Or does the new Nosler #6 list IMR4064. I see the IMR4064 listed for everything from 243Win to 300WM so I am pretty sure it will work just not sure the realtive formula to start loading.

Any help; would be great.

Re: IMR4064 interchange in WSM?

Not the same but on the same line, I belive. I have a surplus of Varget, wich is listed as a WSM powder, but the problem is pressure. The powder will burn hot too fast and you will may not be able to get the speeds you want before you hit the limit on pressure.

The powder will fire a bullet but probably not at the velosity you want.

4064 may be a little different but it was my understanding it was very similar to Varget, RE 15........

anybody please correct me if i'm speaking jibberous.

Try Accurate - MagPro. It is my #1 choice for 7wsm and should work just as well in the 270wsm. Powder Valley has it in stock including 8# jugs. In 7wsm with 150's, it easily produces 3100+ without any pressure issues and provides close to 100% fill. It will push 176's over 2900 in my 24" barrels.

54 grains is only about 80% of fill capacity. Such low fill may present a detonation hazard. Fill capacity is about 67 - 68 grains. Even if the risk is small, there is no need to run the risk. Use a slower powder.

Jeffbird,

That load comes from the IMR loads page I linked to. It was the only load for the .270 WSM listed. It isn't my load in any case as I don't own or shoot that calibre.

I'm an anachronism in that I shoot the totally harmless .270 Win., when I'm shooting .277 cal. pills at all!

Re: IMR4064 interchange in WSM?

4064 is too fast for the 140 gr 270wsm, and might present some risks. Hodgdon's data for all of their powder lines for the 140 gr. use much slower powders.

My best results have been with MagPro, RL22, and H4831sc, in that order. All three provide excellent results and I would be happy to use any of three. For the 270wsm 140 with MagPro, the load zone is between 66 (2985) - 74 (3275 fps) according to Accurate's online data.
As mentioned, in 7wsm, MagPro will push 150 Barnes 3100+ out of a 24" barrel very comfortably.

Here is Hodgdon's data for the 140 gr. 270wsm.

But I don't really run that way much and if it is that far I think it might be worth the $25 fee for hazmat via UPS if you are into that sort of thing? Let me know this will go to you via PM also...thanks for the offer.
