Interested In Rimfire Comps

Currently I am shooting 10 round groups at 100 yards within 1", and within 3" at 200 yards. I think the comps are 30 rouds at each distance? So I've got to work on that. But I figure I'm doing well enough to at least join in the fun. I just have a few questions. What type of rimfires are allowed? I have a .17hmr. Is it for .22's only? What about the glass? Any restrictions on magnification etc.? Also, when and where are they held, and who puts them on? I know the NRA does small bore comps. Is that what you guys competing are doing? Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Interested In Rimfire Comps

The comps here are for .22LR. Rules are here.

You could enter with a 17, but it would not be apples-to-apples. 17 moves a lot faster and hence is a little less susceptible to wind.

That said, nothing prevents you from creating a 17hmr class.

Re: Interested In Rimfire Comps

Cool. Well I'm going to go to the range this weekend and do some shooting. Then if it's all good with you guys, I may propose a .17hmr class. Most likely the format and rules will be the same as the .22LR. The only thing I may consider changing is allowing bags at the bench. I wanna see some very tight shooting. But we'll see how it goes.

Do you guys do this on any particular day of the month or is it just any time you want during that month? Also, there are a few different types of the QT-4 target. Which specific one do you use?

Re: Interested In Rimfire Comps

Just a side note. I emailed the NRA to see if I would be able to compete in their small bore class. They said no, and that their small bore class is also .22's only. They said that I would be placed in the High Power Rifle class. Cooooooool.

Re: Interested In Rimfire Comps

i'm thinking a .17 hmr class would be a good idea, plus it would be good information for many that don't have one to see what one can do.

Re: Interested In Rimfire Comps

AWESOME! A .17 class would be great. I think there are a lot of guys out there like me who own this powerful rimfire, but find themselves between a rock and a hard place when it comes to competing. Too powerful to compete in small bore (.22's), yet just not powerful enough to compete in something like high power rifle. Like you said, it would also show just what these rifles are capable of. I really hope that there is enough interest, and that this really takes off. Thank you very much for presenting the idea. Please let me know how it comes along.

Re: Interested In Rimfire Comps

i see from your pictures you have what appears to be 10/22 flashhider / muzzle break on your rifle. did it seem to work like a barrel tuner in any way? in other words did your groups improve with it on compare to being off?

Re: Interested In Rimfire Comps

^ I did some extensive testing, but nope. Just made my .17 sound like a damn shotgun lol. No difference in accuracy, so I removed it.

Re: Interested In Rimfire Comps

It looks like there's a couple different TQ-4 targets on that sight. Which specific one are we using? Other than that...... WOOHOO! .17's are in baby! I very much appreciate you guys opening this up for us. I hope a lot of you guys out there with .17's check this out. I'd really like to see enough interest and participation to put on a good competition. Come join the fun of pushing your rifle to the edge. Let's see what they can really do.

Re: Interested In Rimfire Comps

Use whichever TQ-4 Target you can see best. Black, Blue, or Orange. I've also found that the Target Paper targets work just as well as the Heavy Paper targets.
