Hey folks,
I'm new to the sport of shooting and new to these forums and I purchased a Remington 700 SPS Varmint .308 today at a gun show. I feel like I got a good price on it and it seems like a good baseline to build a practical shooting rifle off of and I'm psyched to get out there and start shooting.

In any case I just wanted to say hello, and thanks for all of the information I've gotten off of these forums in the past few weeks of research. Looking forward to continuing my education.

PS: I'm in the Charlotte, NC area if there are any local guys around...

Re: Intro. and new rifle

Enjoy the gun and make sure you do your research here when you make any upgrades. It served me well and will do the same for you. I used to live in Mooresville when I was racing but I've moved back to Florida. I love it up there tons of open land to shoot!!

Re: Intro. and new rifle

Welcome to the Hide. Kudos on not saying that you just bought your first sniper rifle. Continue to read, there is a ton of information floating around here (as you probably know) and a bunch of helpful and knowledgeable guys. Good luck.

Oh yeah, and your rifle is a good place to start, good job.

Re: Intro. and new rifle

Thanks for the welcoming. I'm looking forward to getting out to the range this weekend to sight-in and shoot.

No doubt I'll be updating the stock as soon as I can. I'm not a huge fan of the injection molded plastic-fantastic factory stock that's on there now, plus the fact that its not bedded or free-floating the barrel -- it'll need to hold up for a bit though while I replenish funds.

Welcome and congrats on your new stick. What type of glass are you going to put on it? Don't forget pictures and range report.

Re: Intro. and new rifle

Welcome! Good starting point. I met a guy at the range last weekend that had one of those I think. I didn't actually ask him what exact model Remington it was but it looked "tactical" and had a plastic stock and something I thought was really odd. The barrel looked floated from the chamber forward until you got almost to the end of the forearm. Then there was this little molded-in block under the barrel that the barrel rested on. They did that on purpose???

Re: Intro. and new rifle

I'll snap some pics at the range this weekend. Right now I've got this Simmons 3-10x44mm (441044) on loan from a friend. It's extremely clear but glass is on the list of upgrades. I'll obviously know more after this weekend--the stock might have to wait. I know that "what optic should I get for $200-$300?" gets asked in here, so I'll refrain and stick to search.

I'm working on getting a decent cleaning kit to get all the factory nasty out of it before sight-in this weekend. (I'll refrain from asking about whether to break-in as well
