Range Report is 243 win tactical cartridge

Re: is 243 win tactical cartridge

Are you using it for "tactical" applications? try out some different bullet types/weights, and powder combinations, your rifle is most certainly capable of better groups, but are you? all I can say is fling more lead down range, chances are it'll get better...

Re: is 243 win tactical cartridge

I have the same model but I dropped it in a B&C stock. I use the N550 powder with 105 scenars bullets. Very good groupings. Plan to switch out the barrel at some point anyway.

Re: is 243 win tactical cartridge

Don't take this the wrong way but do some research.

The cartridge has proved itself at the hands of many a winner in "tactical" type of competitions, some of the most demanding there is. Accuracy International has made and will make again, a 243 "work" rifle.

The 243 is an excellent cartridge and there are many, many viable tried and true recipes here.

My advice would be to research, ask, and keep pushing forward. Success is there.

There is one of your problems. You are 'most likely' going to need a much faster twist to shoot a heavier 243 bullet. For example, those shooting the 115 DTACs use a 1:7.5 twist.

Re: is 243 win tactical cartridge

You can use the 105 AMAX from Hornady with that 9 1/8 twist and it will work well out to 1000.

Re: is 243 win tactical cartridge

Hey Rob,

How ya doin?

What speed you pushing those 105 Amaxs' at? Not sure if they will stabilise in my little shorty 20" factory barrel varminter.

Would like to give them a try, but didn't want to splash the cash if they were never going to stabilise.

See you in Feb Matey,

Neil

Re: is 243 win tactical cartridge

Hey Neil. I have a 7.5 twist barrel on my .243 so they will stabilize at any speed. Can't really give you good data on a short factory tube but I would give it a try. Worth the cost of a box of 105s if they work.

Re: is 243 win tactical cartridge

I just fought a similiar battle with a Remington .243, it wasn't free floated...that helped...then new scope, rings, base...that helped...trigger job...that helped, but in the end I had to play with seating depth. Everything that I did to the rifle improved it, it went from honestly shooting 5 inch groups @100 to one inch, which still wasn't great. I ended up with an 85 grain Hornady Interbond .040 out of the lands and grouping .400. Play around with your seating depth that might just be it.

Re: is 243 win tactical cartridge

Maybe just for $hits and giggles run a good box of factory ammo down the tube and see what happens. Also is this a new barrel that may have not been broke in? Maybe fouled out real bad? I know some people don't believe in barrel break in. I just know I do. I try to maintain a good break in then tend to open up pretty good between cleanings after.

Re: is 243 win tactical cartridge

My Rem 700 VSF in 22-250 was like this when I first got it. 1.5" groups with factory Hornady 55gr V-Max. Had a competent gunsmith adjust the trigger and bed it. (yes, the stock already came with Al bedding blocks, but we did this anyway.) These two things cut my group size in half. Now I can regularly shoot 0.4 to 0.6" groups all day long with hand loads. Often do better.

If I was in your place and had the money, I'd spring for a McMillan stock, have it properly bedded, and get the trigger adjusted down to 2.5lbs (prefer the old style Rem. trigger). Don't give up on your rifle yet.

Good for them. As Rob pointed out that twist will work to 1K with the 105's, but it works so well that the custom rifles are almost all 1:7.5 to 1:8. So I'm not saying that the barrel is your problem, but I am saying it's not really helping you.

Good Luck with your search.

Re: is 243 win tactical cartridge

I had an sps .243 awhile back. It shot pretty darn good, but only if the rounds were loaded very long, as the throat was VERY long. It really liked the 95 berger vld's, with 41gr H4350, loaded so the rounds as long as possible (loaded them longer with an aics, and it would group at or under moa @1k).

What many folks (and their rifles) are capable of here comes at the cost of: Money, hard earned experience........and just sheer effort.
This stuff DOES NOT come easily.
Keep trying, reading, testing, and learning and you WILL see better results.
