Is ammo about to become available again? Maybe

I just read this article, I know some of this has been on here before, but once DHS gets the billion or so rounds they have ordered, shouldn't ammo become plentiful again, or at least more available? This is of course bases on the fed not ordering another billion or so. Regarding these fighting vehicles (gun ports etc.), this seems like a little bit of a waste of Tax Dollars right now, as we [American tax payers] are spending 40 cents on every tax dollar to pay interest! I hope crime hasn't gotten that bad that we need thousands of armored fighting vehicles on American soil to keep us secure. Any way here is the article:

Security: In addition to stockpiling over a billion bullets and thousands of semiautomatic weapons the feds would deny U.S. citizens, the vehicle of choice for fighting the counterinsurgency war in Iraq is appearing on U.S. streets.

The sequestration question du jour is why the Department of Homeland Security, busy releasing hundreds, if not thousands, of deportable and detained illegal aliens due to budget constraints, is buying several thousand Mine Resistant Armored Protection (MRAP) vehicles?

And just who are they intended to be used against?

This acquisition comes on top of the recent news of the stockpiling by DHS of more than 1.6 billion (with a 'b') bullets of various calibers, enough by one calculation to fight the equivalent of a 24-year Iraq War, and the ordering of some 7,000 5.56x45mm NATO "personal defense weapons" (PDW) — also known as "assault weapons" when owned by civilians.

Additionally, DHS is asking for 30 round magazines that "have a capacity to hold thirty (30) 5.56x45mm NATO rounds."

The Department of Homeland Security (through the U.S. Army Forces Command) recently retrofitted 2,717 of these MRAP vehicles for service on the streets of the U.S. They were formerly used for counterinsurgency in Iraq.

These vehicles are specifically designed to resist mines and ambush attacks. They use bulletproof windows and are designed to withstand small-arms fire, including smaller-caliber rifles such as a .223 Remington. Does DHS expect a counterinsurgency here?

After IEDs began to take a toll on U.S. military forces in Iraq, the Pentagon ordered a large supply of MRAPs.

"They've taken hits, many, many hits that would have killed soldiers and marines in uparmored Humvees," Adm. Michael Mullen, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, said in a recent interview.

A DHS officer, Robert Whitaker, stationed in El Paso, Texas, recently proudly described the agency's new armored toy as "Mine-resistant ... we use to deliver our team to high-risk warrant services ... (with) gun ports so we can actually shoot from within the vehicle; you may think it's pretty loud but actually it's not too bad ... we have gun ports there in the back and two on the sides as well. They are designed for .50-caliber weapons."

This is needed to serve warrants? Perhaps it might have been useful at Waco.

So the question is what does DHS need 1.6 billion bullets, 7,000 Ar-15s and 2,700 armored vehicles for?

What are they anticipating or planning for, and why are few in the media and Congress asking about it, particularly in the light of daily apocalyptic bleats from the administration about sequestration cuts?

Government and "Ordered" doesn't mean give me a damn billion rounds today, it's a contract to produce that quantity at the contract price over time (read years).

What agencies constitute DHS? And how many employees are with said agencies? HINT: This topic has been covered here several times. If the threads don't exist, it's because they got a bit stupid and broke the forum rules. Tread carefully.

In closing, I'd like the ammo and all components to start showing back up as well.

Just Waiting......LOL

Thanks for the heads-up! My point is as the contracts are filled, the producers will have a higher "free" capacity, thus we should see some coming to stores near us. Sequestration may have an impact on this purchasing time table, again the "free" capacity would be to our benefit. It does seem like a lot of ammo, and if it is being stockpiled, the time table should be elastic enough to allow for a longer fill by dead line. We can only hope. Regarding the thousands of fighting vehicles, that seems like a high expense to the tax payer in these times, the govt is borrowing at a insane rate, maybe they should look at cutting out the "nice to haves" until we can afford what we are buying. I am all for the police having the finest equipment-tanks and fighter jets if they think they need them, 99% of all LEOs are the most honest and hard working people in the USA, if they say they need them, by all means, If we an Affford them, buy them! I'd like to add, I am not questioning the honesty or greatness of any of our Govt. people-elected or not, if they work for the U.S. Govt, they are the greatest.

This thread has so, so much potential.

Yep it is. Summer is coming on and money is finally shifting to other items such as.............just about everything but guns. Everybody and there dog has a 22, thousands of AR's were bought that normally wouldn't have been (they gotta eat a little something), I'm no gun shop but every walk of life has hit me up since November of last year asking where to buy ammo. All of them hadn't fired more than 20 rounds over the last 5 to 8 years or better and on top of there rifle ammo inquiry everyone of them now owns a pistol or two.

It's us, hope we mellow out soon.

I was thinking today that Ammo will have to start showing some signs of life soon. Bubba Redneck will be starting to gear up for Huntin Season soon and he will be one pissed of SOB if he can't go Huntin because of some Ammo shortage.

This too shall pass.

We've had droughts before, we'll have droughts again. The thing is we need to learn. I learned from the last drought, I was prepared and haven't nor will I have to cut back on my shooting.

The exception is 22s. I never thought this would have effected 22 rim fire ammo so I wasn't prepared. I have enough for the upcoming summer matches, but not a lot for practice.

Never again. I'll be ready with 22s next time. I'm sure something unforeseen by me next time and I'll get caught.

It comes in cycles, life comes in cycles, our job is to learn from past and present mistakes and be prepared for the next down turn.

It is hopeful, I have just figured out that if I want it at pre-B.S. prices, I need to get up early on Saturday morning and wait at my local WM for them to serve out our rations. There was plenty, you just had to be there to get it. 420rd cans of Fed 193@$175, 500rd spam cans of Tula 223@$150, a couple of bricks of 22 that evaporated instantly, 762x39, 45, 40....just have to position yourself for the delivery. Watched one guy get his 3 box limit on the 420rd cans, and some chick bitch because she just showed up and couldn't get any.lol So, there is some hope. I know I won't be caught half-steppin again.

Eric

Those guys are strict on the three box limit too. I ask for a fourth box for my trouble of waiting for a guy to come to the counter for 20 minutes and you would of thought I asked to fool with his wife.
