Im lookin at mkIIs for a trainer and I really like the F and the FV. Is the bull barrel on the FV really needed? 22 barrels dont really heat up that quickly. Would I be wasting money by getting the bull barreled model?

If I get the mkII F, does any company make bul barrels if I decide to replace it?

Thanks
Shay

Re: Is it needed?

This is going to sound wierd, but I got to looking at the barrel, to bullet size ratio. On normal rifles w/o heavy barrels, the barrel seems thin compaired to the actual size of the inside of the barrel. With the 22, the barrel to bullet size ratio seems better. If the bullet size would increase and the barrel overall would increase, it seems like it would be heavier than normal rifle barrels.

Does that make sense?

Re: Is it needed?

I had a FV std. barrel in .17M2 once. It shot fine but felt too light for me. I think the heavy barrel would have balanced better.

I've shot a lot of .22's over the years w/heavy and std. barrels. The most accurate were all heavy barrels. I kind of think it had more to do with the manufacturers than the barrel weight though (CZ Varmint, 40X, 52D, Anschutz, etc.).

Re: Is it needed?

Go with the FV... Fill the stock with pennies and you'll have a nice heavy, and pretty well balanced, rifle that will be much more steady than the F... I own both and that's just my observation... As far as aftermarket barrels... There aren't any, but over on RFC one guy had success using a 77/22 barrel slightly modified to fit the Savage action... Hope this helps...

It's just semantics... Bottom line, Savage rifles shoot well whether they have a heavy barrel or "pencil" barrel... My previous post forgot to mention that my groups are the same in my F and my FV, or at least so close that there is no measurable difference.... Lookin' forward to seein' ya post the new rifle soon!

Too bad I need to get a 308 first... I need to stop buying guns........ nah.

Someone need a ghillie? lol

Re: Is it needed?

i have both, the stripped down walmart version of the mkii (f model) and the BV (bull barrel). i feel a "pencil" barrel vs. "marker" barrel comparison coming on....

i did notice though on my "f" model, the receiver has a gap in it and the barrel is pinned. i'm not a gunsmith, and perhaps someone can enlighten us on the procedure, but possibly getting a "f" model at a lower price and "upgrading" with a bull barrel later may only take nocking out the old pin, taking out the pencil, putting in the bull, and putting the pin back in. sounds too simple to be true.

i like shay's views on the thickness ratio and have thought about that before, but have no data to back it up other than the biggest advantage of the bull is to reduce harmonics and barrel "whip" and to reduce the "heat swelling / warp" of the barrel, if that's what you want to call it.

however, how much recoil and heat is produced in a .22 to cause those things? not much. you'ld probably be better served with a barrel tuner.

unless you are shooting benchrest where groups are seemingly measured by fractions of a hair, i don't think the bull is needed on a bolt .22, nor the flutes you see coming out.

now if your trying to do a trainer to match the weight of it's centerfire big brother, that's a different story.

i believe if you call savage, they may be able to send you a bull barrel to replace the regular. i don't know how much it would be, but worth a call.
