Is my eroded flash hider affecting accuracy???

Guys, I took off my flash hider the other day and noticed the area that meets up with the barrel was enlarged and eroded out. The guns accuracy has fallen off a little bit. Could this be the culprit?

I can post the pics later today. There is proably right around 800-900 shots on the barrel at most.

If its the original set up(barrel and flash hider) I'd be looking at the barrel first. If your seeing true erosion on the Flash suppressor then I'd expect to see throat and possibly crown erosion

Like said above the F/S has less to do with the accuracy than the crown or the throat

Yes, you can actually see the enlarged hole on the FS and where the metal has bagan to flake away

Could the throat already be shot out only after 800-900 rounds?

I use good ammo and mostly handloads with Varget

Re: Is my eroded flash hider affecting accuracy???

I doubt it would have much effect on accuracy. But 800-900 rds doesn't sound like enough shooting to begin eroding a FH. Do you have a Gemtech Halo over it?

Yes

Here's my AR after only about 500 rounds. It doesn't take long to get a lot of deposits built up in this hidden area.

Somebody mentioned barrel life on the thread. Heat is the biggest enemy to barrel; rapid fire w/o cooling, hot reloads can significantly shorten barrel life. Cleaning also - fouling and copper build up can turn your barrel into a water pipe.

I have not heard anything about fouling around crown or muzzle brakes and accuracy, but wondered the same thing after finding this mess on mine.

Re: Is my eroded flash hider affecting accuracy???

The last inch of the barrel and the crown generally affect accuracy a lot more than the rest of the bore. There used to be semi-famous stories among the bullseye shooters of various barrels with bulges that still held the X-ring.

The throat gets important when it's soooooo bad that the bullet can't get consistently aligned with the bore.

But this crown stuff is only the bore surface itself and the corner of the bore with the muzzle. Metal flaking off if it's the barrel metal is really bad.

Otherwise, the flash suppressor generally affects accuracy only if it's loose and rattling during the firing cycle, or if it has metal too close to the bullet path. The real story about the M14 is that even perfectly-aligned FSs of original configuration were less accurate than ones which were reamed out to .400 or so. It was a fluid dynamics thing (which includes gases), and is part of the reason why the M16 FS flares out from the muzzle area so it has zero effect on bullet path.

And if you get better accuracy without the FS, it can be from barrel dynamics. Read up on the Browning BOSS system.

Re: Is my eroded flash hider affecting accuracy???

I say any carbon that could impact bullet flight would be blasted away with every shot. I have shot some good shooters who's crown under the brake looked just like, or even worse than yours. Check the FS torque and any obstructions. I would thoroughly clean it and go shoot it without the FS, then with it and go from there.
