Re: Is my eroded flash hider affecting accuracy???
The last inch of the barrel and the crown generally affect accuracy a lot more than the rest of the bore. There used to be semi-famous stories among the bullseye shooters of various barrels with bulges that still held the X-ring.
The throat gets important when it's soooooo bad that the bullet can't get consistently aligned with the bore.
But this crown stuff is only the bore surface itself and the corner of the bore with the muzzle. Metal flaking off if it's the barrel metal is really bad.
Otherwise, the flash suppressor generally affects accuracy only if it's loose and rattling during the firing cycle, or if it has metal too close to the bullet path. The real story about the M14 is that even perfectly-aligned FSs of original configuration were less accurate than ones which were reamed out to .400 or so. It was a fluid dynamics thing (which includes gases), and is part of the reason why the M16 FS flares out from the muzzle area so it has zero effect on bullet path.
And if you get better accuracy without the FS, it can be from barrel dynamics. Read up on the Browning BOSS system.
