My friend and I have a debate about eating sagebrush. He says it's toxic and not for human consumption, while I've eaten the sagebrush leaves by the handful and never suffered any consequences.

Then, I check out the internet google machine and find a total of 10 websites, 5 of which state that it is toxic, and 5 that state it is edible.

Anyone here with any thoughts about this????

Any edible plant specialists in the house, YO?!

Re: Is Sagebrush Edible??

Dude, I ate sagebrush to see what it's like, you know, maybe a good survival food since there is so much around, kinda like I've eaten cactus and yucca, etc.

Still wondering about its' toxicity, though...

Eat some more, and post back results in a week. If you don't, we know if its toxic or not

Re: Is Sagebrush Edible??

Yeah Greg, already read that, as stated in my original post, and still there are several other websites stating that sagebrush is edible.

So which is it? Edible or not?

Hmm. I think I'd look for other means of sustenance, even in the worst of conditions in the most unforgiving of locales.

Re: Is Sagebrush Edible??

I always follow the Homer Simpson rule on survival... Leaves of 3 let it be, leaves of 4 eat some more!

So how many leaves does it have?

Well, that saved me the work of a pronghorn hunt.

"The plant's oils are toxic to the liver and digestive system of humans if taken internally, so care must be taken during any form of internal use. Generally, toxic symptoms will subside 24–48 hours after ingesting the plant."

Re: Is Sagebrush Edible??

... Yes, but the real question is..., is it palatable?

Don't think it has much nutritional value. Use it for the medicinal purposes, or as stated above, bait for trapping some food.
