Is the Remington 700 SS 5R mil-spec a good gun?

Re: Is the Remington 700 SS 5R mil-spec a good gun?

That'd be about the same price as new wouldn't it?

950 for the 5R
-200 for the stock
------
750

+ 750 for the McMillan?

1500 for a new gun vs 1400 for one that may have 50 rounds through it? Or it may have 5000 through it.........

Very good points to consider.

Tough to find a new 5R for $950...McM wait times are bad...
I'd say try for less then $1400 first then take it if not.
.2cents
Really liked me 5R.

The 5r is real hard to find where i am. Ilooked for about 9 months before i found one the price was 1025+tax which is less than the going rate here. But i did want a new rifle i wanted to break it in correctly which i hear is critical.

If you do not mind buying off of Gunbroker, they are there everyday for around $1,000. I am in CA and I have not seen one on the shelf at the dealers I visit, so I bought mine from a dealer in NY about 5 months ago.

if you are looking fro a 308 or 223 they are availabele in many places. gunbroker has them most regularly and Sprtsmans Finest in austin has them in stock.

If you want a 300WM then best of luck. I looked for about a year. there were a couplple that made the gunbrokers and they were gone asap. I recently found a used one and snatched it up.

There apparently is only one distributor for these from Remington in St. Cloud MN. My local dealers work with thee guys all the time and called on the 300 on several occasions and the answer is always could be tomorrow or two years from now. This is only what I have been told on the 300WM. The 308 are in stock as of a week ago for 960$ from my dealer.

Re: Is the Remington 700 SS 5R mil-spec a good gun?

Pretty much the only difference between the 5R and PSS is the barrel. Remington had been outsourcing the 5R barrels so the internal finish should be a little bit better than their in house barrels. Wasn't one of the premier barrel makers, just one of the bulk aftermarket/OEM makers. Don't know if they still do but for some of their initial offerings or low production rifles they even outsourced the chambering/mounting work.

As far as a stock goes, give Brunos out in Phoenix a call, there are usually a few semi finished and unfinished (not fully inletted) A5s on hand ready for immediate shipping.

Re: Is the Remington 700 SS 5R mil-spec a good gun?

If you want to know the quality I am more than happy with mine in 300 WM I bought about a year ago it is the 24 inch barrel model. Was thinking about selling since I rarely shoot it but I took it out today and shot it at 1000 yards for the first time ever for the rifle and myself past 600 and hit a 55 gallon drum 6 out of 10 rounds after 3 rounds to adjust for elevation (13 total) and after looking at targe if I had dialed down .5 MOA I probably could have had 10 for 10 because all 6 rounds were at the top 6 inches of the barrel so I am sure I had some go over. With handloads this thing has the capability to shoot extremely well depending on the who is behind it.
