Hey everyone, I'm new to the long range scene and I just got my first rifle today! Anyways, I just got a rem 700 bdl in 7mmRM and am now trying to find a good, cheaper scope to put on it. I'm not trying to be stingy, I know you generally get what you pay for, but due to recent car trouble my budget has been cut quite a bit. After a bit of research and a couple fellow member's suggestions, I have decided to possibly buy a Vortex Viper 6.5-20x44. I have heard good things about vortex scopes, and was just wondering if anyone with hands-on experience could help me decide whether or not to buy it. Or if anyone could recommend another scope under $500, I would appreciate it.

Re: Is this a good budget scope?

well thank you for your affirmation, I think I will give it a day or so to see anyone else's input then I will make my purchase!

That scope will work just fine. Vortex has really made a name for itself over the past few years. In fact my rifles wear only two brands of scope these days Premier and Vortex.

Re: Is this a good budget scope?

Does that rifle that you bought have a stout recoil? If it does, you may want to reconsider the Viper. The eye relief is pretty short. Although it works pretty well with something like a .223 or .308, larger calibers may result in busted noses and cut eye brows.

I know that the 7 mag isn't the baddest out there, but it ain't no whimp either.

I've had good results over several years with a half dozen Tasco Varmint/Target MilDot scopes. The prices are definitely in the Budget category, but it's my considered opinion they perform better and longer than their cost might suggest.

I own 4 of the 6-24x42 and 2 of the 2.5-10x42.

I am also recently new to the long(er) range shooting world. I really wanted a NF, but budget dictated something less expensive. I went with the Millett TRS-1 and I have been very happy with it. Clear glass and good features. Customer service has also been really good.

My little bro has been using one of the new SWFA (used to be super sniper) 3-9 and it really works well also.

Re: Is this a good budget scope?

The eye relief was my main concern with the viper, but It is actually just about the same as the scope I'm using now, which is a crappy old redfield 4-12. I can handle the rifles recoil with very little problem, as I am accustomed to shooting my fathers 300 win mag.
