I would like to accurize and lighten my 7RM TRG-S.

I was thinking
Edge McM TRG-S stock w/ limbsaver recoil pad
26" Bartein #3

My goal for the finished rifle weight before scope was 7.5#

I can't find anything on how heavy the TRG-S action is, but from the McM and Bartlein websites those two components alone would be about 5lbs. Any information would be appreciated.

Thanks
Seth

Re: Is this build realistic

It would be really tough.

Do you have a particular need which is dictating the 26" barrel?

Is the extra 13-15 fps on average worth the whatever number of ounces you could save with a 24" or even 22"?

I have looked at a number of field studies with measured chronometric readings for a variety of ammo on the 308 platform. The data suggests that you really aren't losing a whole hell of a lot when you drop the barrel length, even down to around 20.5 inches.

Below 20.5 you do start to see more significant reductions as your reduction in the completeness of the powder burn becomes more of a curve than a linear relationship but beyond that length, the gains are questionable unless you have a specific purpose in mind.

The rifle would stay a 7mm Rem Mag. I really like the 7mags. I was under the impression that 24" was about as short as it was a good idea to go due to the burn times on the powders. Right now I've been using VV 560. But due to the unavailablity of that lately, I was going to switch to 4831SC. Right now in factory configuration it has a 24" barrel. I wanted to speed up the twist a little so I could shoot 180 bergers in it like I do in my 7WSM LR gun.

I wanted a general purpose hunting gun that was light enough so that when I stuck a scope and sitting bipod on it, it wouldn't be too bad to carry.

Re: Is this build realistic

If you want to go with a longer barrel, go with a 24".

Remember your purpose here. You say you want a hunting gun and then you are going to weigh yourself down with a monster unwieldy 26" barrel?

What are you shooting?

Lets say you are shooting a hot loaded Berger 180 VLD round against 300lb game. Your max effective distance against the game is still only going to be 800-850 yards.

Could you hit the shot from further? Sure. But you are quickly degrading lethality beyond that range.

In that context, does the few extra percent powder burn make a difference between you and the deer in even the longest shot you are willing to safely take?

I think if you are being honest, the answer is Probably not.

Re: Is this build realistic

i went with a 7wsm on a lawton long action in a manners "super light" stock.
i wanted to keep weight down but not give anything up on accuracy/ velocity so i went with a 26 in light palma with 8 flutes. rifle without optics weighes 8 pounds 9ounces
