I'd say that's not actually what causes communism to fail.
Most Communist & Socialist systems have a window dressing of "ownership", such as "ownership" of your apartment or transportation or other things the state doles out to everyone that are yours as long as you do as you are told to the amount you are told.
I'd say it's the motivation problem.
If you have no pressing motivation to work to get your living needs taken care of, then the larger part of people become lazy and don't want to do any extra which means the system gets unbalanced.
If no matter how hard you work all the outcomes for you personally are the same, eventually the majority will start doing the absolute minimum.
In either case the society slowly collapses as progress and excess stop being available. Those in charge usually try some kind of threats and brutality to "motivate" people to produce more or provide more, but all that does in the end is reinforce the doing as little as possible becoming an art form.
