Ok just got my 260 back from Mike Crain at Boatrite custom guns. He did a excellent job of setting it up. But like a dumbass I didn't send the trigger. Now the ^#$%^* Jewel trigger safty is binding. Releived the stock and finally found it is hitting the seekins DBM bottom metal just in front of the trigger. It onlu does it whn the rear action bolt is tightened all the way down and I mean all the way down. if you look at the safty linkage of the tigger that "dogleg" on the horizontal tranfer bar is hitting. Sorry for the long explaination. My question. it is less than a mm of contact.
Should I take metal off the top of a $300 piece of bottom metal or do I take the tranfer bar off and grind the point on the bottom of the dog leg off. I was always taught grind on the least expensive part first:). I tried to contact Glen by phone but he seems top be pretty busy. Hopefully working on my WSM bottom metal. I could also take the jewel out and put a rifle basix in. But thats how I got this one in the first place. I bought it for my aics and it didn't fit it either. I quess when then say drop replacement for 700 it doesn't necc. say drop in and work:0

Re: Jewel safty binding

Logic dictates you alter the least expensive part but that only holds true if it will not compromise the structural integrity of the part you are working on. Personally I wouldnt have an issue working a little off of the bottom metal as long as it was not going to effect the function of it. After all some fitting is about normal.

Re: Jewel safty binding

Thanks Guys. Im just never sure if grinding on aluminum messes up the hardness or not. Glenn quit answering Snipershide post and get back to work on that WSM magazine:). Thanks for the help.

Re: Jewel safty binding

Badger had a problem with their bottom metal hitting the Jewell trigger as well in several places. Any new bottom metal from them has now been changed for this.

The last build I did with a Jewell Trigger and Badger DBM, that was'nt the case. I still had to mill a recess in the side of the trigger housing.

Surgeon DBM's on the other hand, never an issue.

Are you sure it was a newer version of the Badger? I have gotten new and old in the last few orders I had.

It also depended on how deep the stock was cut for the bottom metal and barreled action, and where exactly the barreled action and bottom metal ended up in the stock after bedding.

If everything is perfect the newer version will not hit the trigger, its close but it will miss. If something is off just a little it can still hit the side but the older version would hit every time, both in the front and side.

Re: Jewel safty binding

Not sure if it was new or old. The safty linkage was bottoming out on the Bottom Metal. No big deal, I just used a .185" End Mill and cut a slight recess for clearence, wider and deeper. I received the DBM in question about three weeks ago.

Re: Jewel safty binding

Not to hijack, but I've got a related question.
Is this an issue that only affects the safety?
I just put a Jewell on my 308 and since then my bolt feels "gritty" on cocking. Bolt lift is smooth if raised when its already cocked, just "gritty" when cocking.
Safety functions fine. McM A5 w/M5 DBM of unknown generation.

The front of the Jewell would hit the bottom front of the bottom metal as well as the right side when the safety was worked. If you think the trigger is binding up under torque remove it from the stock and check bolt lift. It could be the cocking piece and sear are not working together correctly.

Check and see if you are getting a galling between the cocking pieces cocking piece bolt angle. If so check for burrs and if need be polish this cocking piece angle and put in a little grease. This is a common issue when getting this rough or gritty feel only when cocking the weapon when the firing pin is down. Won’t get this feel after the pin is up and cocking and re-cocking the bolt.

Re: Jewel safty binding

I will look at it and get it sorted out. I had to open them up for the new remington triggers and i have a jewel floating around the shop that i know i tested the other day when i did my WSM metal. I will just put some extra clearance in.

The bolt shroud/cocking piece gulling will do just what Randy is saying.
