Just how "innacurate" is an M1A super-match?

Carbon BBL Douglas 6 groove, 1-in-10" twist 22" version.

I hear that they are only capable of "meh" accuracy, and have only shot mine w/irons, so have now way of proving otherwise.

And, assuming a JAE, or bedded McMillan helps, how much improvement can I expect?

thnx.

I doubt anyone could predict what will happen with any specific rifle, but the M1A is capable of very good accuracy.....for a battle rifle.

If your doing DCM competition w/ iron sights, the rifle can outshoot most shooters. A bedded rifle will make you competeteie with other M1A shooters, but not with the poodle shooters.

If you are scoping it, I'd look elsewhere.

(and for the people who fit my sig line below, that are sure to follow and firebomb my post, yes, this is my personal firsthand experience, with a standard M1A that I shot a bunch, then dressed out in full match configuration, competed with in high power, and scoped.)

LOL... thanks for the post.
I was affriad of that. I bought into the Super Match on trade being convinced that they were 3 shot .5MOA gauranteed from SA.

But, I do have a scope for it that has yet to be installed.

I just wanted a new stock for ergonomics, but no need in spending the money if I can shoot DCM as is.

I had a supermatch that was under 1MOA with GMM all day everyday. I would leave it as is for DCM matches. You will be the limiting factor in the rifles accuracy until you shoot the barrel out,or switch to a AR15,which will happen sooner than later. In service rifle highpower you either shoot a AR15 or get beat by one. I like the M1A. I LOVE the Garand. Neither are in serious competition when AR15s are on the line. TJR

Re: Just how "innacurate" is an M1A super-match?

Ihave owned numerous Match M1A's and all shor MOA or less with Handloads. I don't think you will gain any noticeable accuracy improvements with the changes you described. Even the USAMU gets around MOA-3/4 moa with custom built M1A's...M1 Garands are the same way...It seems like that is the limit in terms of accuaracy no matter how much you do to them.

Re: Just how "innacurate" is an M1A super-match?

Sir,

Having been on the US Army Rifle Team, qualifying as a sniper at the AMU Sniper School, and owning an M1A tuned at the Custom Gun Shop I can tell you I don't believe we EVER issued a sub 1-MOA M-14 or M21.

The USAMU no longer has ANY M14s or M21s with the exception of one for demonstration and layout example purposes.

I don't recall the M14 accuracy standard -- but the M16 beats it, and they must pass three 10-shot groups inside 3.28 inches at 300 Meters (from a machine rest).

Re: Just how "innacurate" is an M1A super-match?

I have no experience with the rifles in JAE stocks, but the bedded Super Match rifles, in walnut or McM stocks, are capable of MOA or better (3/4 MOA) accuracy with match ammo or handloads and when the operator does his/her part. You may be able to squeeze a little more out of them with a high-quality mount and optics, but not much more.

All this sounds vaguely familiar for some reason.
