Kestrel 4000 problem

I have a Kestrel 4000 that only stays on for about 40 seconds. Even with brand new batteries it will power up to the time set screen then slowly fade out. Pull the batteries out and put them back in and the whole process repeats. I emailed NK's repair email address a week ago and have not received a reply.

It is about 5 years old. Any thoughts? Anyone had a similar issue?
