I am now at around 2850 round according to my log book for my KMW 260rem.

The rifle has seen 2 years of hard competition use. NCPPRC Monthly Long Range, Steel Matches, and Practice Sessions, 2 Sac Valley NO BULLs, 2 SCPRC Events, 1 Las Vegas 2 day event, and 2 AZ TPRC events.

Barrel Specs:
Krieger 4 groove
8.5 twist
#10 MTU
26"

Load Specs:
47.0gn of H4831SC
139gn Scenar
F210M
Rem Brass
OAL to Ogive is 2.240 (have not changed since the barrel was new)

This load gave me about 2800 to 2825FPS. It was safe from 40 degrees to 100 degrees.

On Saturday I shot a 5 shot group @ 100yards that measured almost an inch. That's pathetic for what this rifle use to do.

During yesterdsays long range match I was + 1.0 to 1.3 mils from 800 - 1000 yards from my regular dope for the conditions. I ended up at 9.3mils from a 100yard zero to center up at 1000. Even with the lost in elevation/velocity the rifle grouped very well at distance.

I think it is safe to say to expect about 2600 good rounds out of a 260rem before the performance starts to taper off. This rifle was no safe queen and I shot the shit out of it for almost 2 years now in competition. Those going to this cartridge might want to start planning on barrel purchases and rebarreling jobs with their smith of choice.

Since I am done with big matches for 2010 I will limp on this barrel and see when the accruacy will go away along with the velocity. Inside 600 she is still rock solid. Going to push it to 3000 rounds and see what happens from there. Shoot my KMW on the steel matches inside 600 and my Newman 308win on the LR matches.

Re: KMW 260rem @ 2850 rounds.

Very interesting, Vu! I'm at 1100 rounds on mine, and (knock on wood) she's still shooting good. I've talked to other shooters and they said 2000-2500 was expected. So, that's right in with it.
You ought to try seating that bullet out a little further, if you can. You might get a little of that accuracy back.

Re: KMW 260rem @ 2850 rounds.

My personally feeling is that ammo cost more than barrels these days. Squeeze the most accuracy and performance out of the tube as you can, for as many rounds as you can and chuck it. The only reason I plan to keep shooting this barrel is to find out where the complete failing point is.

I can have a new tube put on for less than 500.00 and know for a fact I get two good years of service out of it again. If I set the barrel back I get a ????? on what the performance will be for XXX number of rounds.

1000 - Lapua Scenars cost 260 to 300.00 these days.
Match Fees
Travel Fees
Powder
Primers

Add all those up and you'll find that twisting on a new tube is far less expensive than missing due to a shot out tube.

YMMV,

Vu

Re: KMW 260rem @ 2850 rounds.

Vu I got 8000 out of my last barrel cutting off about 1 1/4" every 1500 .

My newest barrel I cut a different throat in it .

Right now Ive got over 1k threw it and my oal is 2.780 I figer this one will go over 2500 befor it needs to be set back.

Re: KMW 260rem @ 2850 rounds.

VU,
When I was shooting comps mine went in or around the 23 to 2600rd range. It was more noticable at the longer ranges. It would still group pretty good to 600 but would open up after that.

On my current 260 I set it back at 1800rds and am now at around 2800 and its still shooting tight for me. However I have not shot this one as hard since I am not competing anymore.

This doesn't compute if you're lopping off 1.25" every 1500 rounds starting with a initial 5" to work with. You would have had to cut it at least 5 times already which exceeds availability by 1.25". This doesn't even account for the threads themselves.. I suppose it's possible if you started with some super oversized diameter and threaded into a shallow taper. Couldn't do it safely with a normal barrel unless it was for something with a small chamber.

Re: KMW 260rem @ 2850 rounds.

I might try to set this barrel back just to see what happens. I have 2 6.5 barrels ready to go...but am curious.

Steve, no problem on sharing. =) There is always this debate on how long a barrel will go so I figure I would post my notes.

Re: KMW 260rem @ 2850 rounds.

FWIW, my chromoly 260 barrel is at about 2300 rounds after this weekend and I'm noticing flyers about .5 minutes out from the group. Maybe only 1 in 10 or 20, but I think its starting to go.

uhhh ya, damn those flyers eh?.... you still won.

Re: KMW 260rem @ 2850 rounds.

I've got a 260 built by Bighorn Arms. I've got about 1k through it now pushing a 139 at 2980. Still shooting better than I can. I'll post as round count goes up

And unfortunatly, he has a lot of tricks!

Re: KMW 260rem @ 2850 rounds.

Just had one of those "duh" moments. Gotta lop off both ends. It computes afterall! 8000 rounds of accuracy is still remarkable.

As for me:
Krieger 8 Twist 27"
139 Scenars @ 2840 FPS
H4350

Groupings open up (MOA) after about 800 rds of no cleaning crown has caked on carbon.

No discernable difference from new in accuracy or trajectory after 1500 rds.

Will rechamber and recrown to a spare action after about 2K and it should make a good hunter for a few years to come.
