I just purchased a Model 70 winchester, ser.# 151xxx. Shows end of 49 production. It has a Lyman 82 scope on it with period mount. wood finish is dull, not quite an oil. Caliber is 30 gov. (30.06). I know m70's and am looking for any military markings and do not see any. Is there a chance this was put together for a Korea deployment and is there a place to check serial numbers. I bought it because of the very nice m82 scope.
Thanks

filmhog, sent you a PM, does gun have sporter style stock or marksman ? Checkered or plain? I sure would like to see a photo, most Korea and Vietnam mod 70's were pre WWII guns under SN 48000 which includes a few after war transition models. When barrels were no longer serviceable the USMC used Douglas air guaged. I love em' check your PM

FWIW when I went to Perry first time in 57 I remember talking to a Col Goodwin and he said he remembered Mod 70s in 300 H&H Mag being delivered to Guadalcanal and the snipers zeroing them on coconuts at 300 yards. Wonder where they went to?

There are very few pics of the M70's used in Vietnam. Your best bet is to get the book "The One Round War, USMC Snipers in Vietnam" by Peter Senich. I have the book and it is by far the best info that you can find on the M70's used during Vietnam. It also talks about the M40 and M40a1. Great book with a lot of great info that you would need.
