I was wondering about some advice as to which would be a better barrel for 300 win mag. I've tried searches, but only came up with these guys against everyone else not head to head. I'm having Center shot rifles true the action and chamber and crown my barrel. They were the only people I could find to work in my action, being a ruger and all. I know certain barrel makers do different calibers better than others. I don't think I can go wrong with either I just can't decide what's most of it. I know chambering is pretty important so I'm going to have Mr Dix make me a custom reamer for 220grain and hopefully the new 225 hornaday hpbt. The wait time for both is around the same as is the price.

I have a couple of both. A 6.5X47Lapua in Kreiger and Rock and a 308 in Kreiger and Rock. They have identical twist rates for both calibers. The Kreigers are on a 591 Surgeon actions and the Rocks are on Rem 700 actions. They both shoot the same. A Rock barrel on a not trued 700 action in 6.5 shoots minute of bobcat ass at 130 yards off the bipod. (the bobcat anus was about half inch in diameter)
I would get whichever can get here sooner. They will shoot the same.

Kind of off your topic... but the new 225 BTHP, I can understand, but what is your thinking behind custom chambering for the 220 over the 210/208's which have a higher BC and can be driven harder?

Always like to get others' perspectives.

i couldn't agree with this more, crappy action to build on but great choices in barrels. if you like controlled round feed get a winnie or mauser.

Re: Krieger vs Rock creek for 300 win mag

I just figured since its a 1/2-3/4 gun all day stock that I could get my feet wet on a little competitive shooting without having to invest in a new action. If I like it and do decent I'll order a custom next year. I know Remington is the way to go but the rifle doesn't owe me a dime and wanted to show her a little love.

Re: Krieger vs Rock creek for 300 win mag

I knew I shouldn't have mentioned the word Ruger.Lol Its like a dirty word most places. It already wears a Leupold 6x18 so glass isn't the issue the 1500 rounds down the stock tube are. So I figured I'd rebarrel before it gets its new chassis.

go 700 if your going to the trouble of building one, krieger on my 1086 surgeon, this was my first real quality rifle and after couple days shooting steel i set it in the rack and started my usual cleaning. I was amazed at how easy/quickly this barrel cleaned up. these barrels ARE SLICK and obviously very accurate , if surgeon likes em , you should like em!

Re: Krieger vs Rock creek for 300 win mag

As has been mentioned already, both barrels are excellent. I originally was going to have a Krieger put on the last rifle I had built. I wanted to start with a quality action. I looked at buying a donor 700 but when I figured in gunsmithing to true that action it became obvious, that the custom actions were any more expensive. I did some research and ended up buying a Stiller Tac30 from Jerry Stiller. He offered to barrel the action for me and said he could get a Krieger if I wanted but suggested a Rock Creek barrel. I went with his suggestion and coudln't be happier with the rifle. It shoots accurate, doesn't foul easily and cleans up quickly. I have no doubt I would be saying the same thing if he had used a Krieger. Pick whichever one you can get to meet your time frame and don't look back.

The way I understand it 5R actually reduces velocity, the rifling reduces preasure and in turn reduces velocity.

I asked myself that same question(which one)? I couldn't decide so I built both.

Re: Krieger vs Rock creek for 300 win mag

The 5R barrel theoretically should have increased velocity over a conventionally rifled barrel because the 5R profile doesn't have the sharp 90 degree angle where the lands and grooves meet and the bullet should have a better seal while going down the bore. This should mean less gas leaking past the bullet and higher pressures, not lower pressures. In real life, I can't tell the difference in my rifles.

Re: Krieger vs Rock creek for 300 win mag

All I want is a bad ass hunting rifle that I can shoot some paper with. I have a range in my backyard that is 365 yards and the groups fall apart as soon as the barrel has a little heat. Since it has around 1500 rounds through it , why not spend a whopping $300 on a WAY BETTER barrel.

+1 have both. Just depends on who has what when you want it.
