If you had a rem700 la laying around with an -06 bolt face, and wanted to build the largest best performing round possible on this action what would you build? I have been thinking 280ai or 284 win.

Re: LA options

best performing for what?
are you gonna have the action worked over?
if so then you can step up to alot bigger rounds up to the 338 Lapua.

280 Ackley is an awsome round though

Without recommending any particular round, things you should consider:

Range goals: 1000 yds, 1500 yds, further or shorter?
Intended targets? Paper, steel, or big game, mixed?
Brass availability?
Mag geometry?
Do you want to run a DBM? And if so what mags and BM are available for feeding your candidate round?

Lots to think about that has absolutely nothing to do with finding "largest best performing round possible" for a .472 LA bolt face.

Re: LA options

Ok I wanna keep the same bolt face 473, shoot 1000 yds, hunt big game, I want the most energy possible without shooting a fat pig of a round. 30-06 is ok but wont a 280 ai kill it with the 180 vld for lang range snd the 162 amax fir shorter cheaper work?

Re: LA options

savvy hand rolled 208 and heavier boolits for that .06

i'm thinking you would be able to tip over any thin skinned north American game animal within your travel budget.....even them feral hogs.

Re: LA options

Yea a 208 A-max or 210 berger run out of a 30-06 Ackley case would be a hell of a round. Might lose a few MOA to the 280 Ai with a 180 Berger at 1000yds but it woulden't exactly be "beating the hell out of it"
or you could get some 180gr Henson aluminum tipped bullets and maybe beat the 180 berger
very effeceint giving longer barrel life
30-06 Lapua brass is great stuff !!.
A Wyatt's box would allow you to seat the bullets WAY out.
