Hey guys-

I have been doing a bit or research here about the ladder tests and OCW. I have some 175gr SMKs and 155gr Scenars that I would like to work up in my Savage 10FP (stock barrel, 1-10 twist). Based on what I have read here, I want to try the following for the first ladder tests:

For the .308WIN 175gr SMKs:

Benchmark 37-45gr in .5gr increments
Varget 38-46gr in .5gr increments
IMR4895 38-45gr in .5gr increments
BL-C(2) 39-45gr in .5gr increments

For the .308WIN 155gr Scenars:

Benchmark 39-46gr in .5gr increments
Varget 43-50gr in .5gr increments
IMR4895 42.5-49.5gr in .5gr increments
BL-C(2) 44-51gr in .5gr increments

I realize these are alot of different powders and I am starting low to make sure I can tell when I get pressure signs. Is there anything you guys see in my plan that is just rediculous, charge-wise?

Also, From reading the info here, it sounds like the minimum MV to get to 1000yds for 175gr SMK is 2700fps and for the 155gr Scenar is somewhere around 2900fps. Can anyone confirm this?

Also, any other information about my plans are welcomed and appreciated.

Thank you

Re: Ladder Loads & Muzzle Velocity

Your limits for 4895 and Benchmark with 175's seem too high.

49.5 gr of 4895 and 155's? You may not get the bolt open without the use of a hammer ...

Once the bolt starts to stick you are a 1-2 grains too hot.

Good shooting ...

10-4, Thank you. Can anyone comment about the required muzzle velocities to reach 1000yd?

Here, one mile above sea level, a sierra 175 Matchking going only 2,200 fps will still be supersonic at 1,000 yards.

Don't know where you are but you should have no trouble getting the 175's to go 2,600 fps and this will stay super sonic at 1,000 yds even at sea level.

No worries, Good shooting ...
