eta: update in last post

remington 700
178 gr Hornady HPBT match
varget
shot at about 400 yards

im just getting into long range shooting (aka im not very good yet)so i shot 2 identical ladder tests and here are the results

the "X" shots are are sighters and barrel foulers. After shot 1 i adjusted .4 mils windage to get away from the edge of paper

shot 10 i felt myself drop the shot low

to me is looks like shots 4,5,6 on each target have the least vertical dispersion so that would be 44.2, 44.4, and 44.6

which actually makes sense, since quickload said i was on a OBT node with 44.4 grains

in case you feel like watching the videos (i sped them up so about 30 seconds each)

Re: Ladder test 308 178 Horn. HPBT Pics and Video

should i now load some rounds at 44.2, 44.4 and 44.6 and shoot for groups? to see whats best?

should i even believe this node since i have lighter powder charges higher on target than heavier charges

Re: Ladder test 308 178 Horn. HPBT Pics and Video

Based on those targets, I would load 44.4 gr and work on seating depth. I would go from touching the lands back at least .050" in .010" increments and shoot some 3-shot groups, then fine tune in smaller increments, assuming you can touch the lands and still fit your magazine.

Re: Ladder test 308 178 Horn. HPBT Pics and Video

he'll never touch the lands and fit the shells into the mag, I can touch the lands at 2.960", mag well is of course 2.830".

I load mine 1 at a time, so dont need the magazine.

Re: Ladder test 308 178 Horn. HPBT Pics and Video

yep no touching the lands for me. so coal is mag length at 2.83

i loaded 3 each at 44.2 44.4 and 44.6, gonna go out in a couple of hours and see which one has the least vertical spread.

Re: Ladder test 308 178 Horn. HPBT Pics and Video

I don't use that bullet but I can touch the lands in my PSS with 168 SMK and still feed from the internal magazine. Maybe the Hornady bullets are different.

I would go with the 44.4 gr as it should be in the center of the node. Yes, you may get a little tighter a bump up or down, but the most forgiving load will be in the center of the node. It will also be the most accurate on average across different temps.

Re: Ladder test 308 178 Horn. HPBT Pics and Video

okay went out and shot some more at 300 yards

the 2 best were 44.4 and 44.6, but wanted to see what yall think

here is 44.4 velocities = 2569, 2578, 2554

IMG_20111211_162240.jpg

and 44.6 velocities= 2583, 2594, 2578

IMG_20111211_162301.jpg

the ES is smaller with 44.6 so should i just stick with it??

and for the hell of it i loaded 5 rounds of 44.4 before i left the house and shot this group

i felt myself screw up the shot on the left. it was the first shot
IMG_20111211_162354-1.jpg

so 44.4 is a good load.

should i load some more 44.4 and 44.6 and test again

Re: Ladder test 308 178 Horn. HPBT Pics and Video

Test again and if you duplicate it that the load.
What kind of brass are you using?
