Land of the Midnight Sun
I`m in the market for 2 new handguns for my wife.

A little background:
I am currently shooting competitions and targets on my time off, and she decided to join me in my hobby so we could spend more time together.
I`m away most of the time, and she needs her own guns as shes getting quite serious when it comes to competitions.
For the "plinking" comps, shes getting a Walther SSP or GSP, but for other comps she needs some "real" weaponry.
I want her to train with and know intimately her own weapons as it makes me feel better for her when shes home alone, knowing she has her own weapons set up for her, not just using mine.
I want something for her that WILL go bang every time she pulls the trigger, no bells or whistles, plain functionality and decent precision.
Over here, self defense/personal protection involving firearms is a BIG NO-NO and thus not discuss-able on local forums.

My 1911s fits her hands pretty well, but my S&W 686 6" is too large for her.
We have been looking online a lot, and as shes very interested in design, art and such shes VERY picky when it comes to apperance and esthetics.
Another problem is that local gunshops are very limited in their on-shelf stock so for her to actually handle the different weapons we have to rely mainly on my buddies bringing their guns over.

What I would like for her is one 4" or 6" SS revolver capable of handling both .38+P and .357 magnum, and one 9mm pistol.
Reason for choice of calibers; cost and availability of ammo, as primary use will be range and competition use, other calibers are not optional this time around.

She does not like my 686 due to the fact its too heavy and the grips are too big.
She likes the model 620 better from the looks of it, as the barrel contour is different and appeals to her unlike that of the 686, that she finds too bulky.
Took the stock grips off and from what I could see from her holding it by the bare frame, a smaller grip could work on that frame-size.
She would like it in pink! Any ideas here? Could not find that S&W sell their pink grips separately (the "dark" pink ones)
Showed her the Ruger GP100s and Taurus online as well, but size etc is hard to tell by pics, and she still wants the dark pink grips...

As for the pistol (judged by looks only); she really likes this one http://www.taurususa.com/product-details...eadcrumbseries=
Mostly due to the fact that its narrower at the top of the grip, as her hand hurts a bit at her thumb after shooting my 1911s, and she feels that the "notch" at the back top of the grip would fit her hand nicely.
I will try to take her shooting Glock, SIG, CZ and H&K next week, but from pics she does not like any of those much...
Does anyone have any info/experience with the Taurus in question? One issue is that our local Taurus importer is about to close for good and does not have anything on shelf she can play with, I will have to import this one for her myself.

Input especially from the ladies or guys with armed girls appreciated

Re: Lady`s choice - pistol and revolver

I'll see if I can look up one of the little smith revolvers(I believe they offered a pink version)....

As far as the semi auto pistol, I would recommend weapons that are very easy to pull slide back to chamber and then go from there. Most women have less grip strength and require a light feeling slide. The H&K's have a very easy to chamber slide pull. Springfields XD's (Which is Croatian by origin )have a VERY hard slide pull. I have heard from my local dealer that Taurus makes a pistol that has a very light slide pull and is female friendly.

I have also tried to assist females in finding weapons that they could use. Hope this helps....Good luck in finding what you need..SmokeRolls

Re: Lady`s choice - pistol and revolver

Look at the Model 66 (K frame vs L frame) for a reduction in weight. The grip is the same, but is easy to change out for different sizes. Frankly, I would shy away from Taurus. Buy once cry once. BTW - my wife's house gun is a Mod 66. If she and my 11-year old son can shoot them, your wife can.

And auto pistols are so individual that only she can decide. But a lot of people like the M&P. Different grip sizes etc.

Re: Lady`s choice - pistol and revolver

Thanks!
I know that the small S&Ws come in pink, and she would love a grip like this http://www.smith-wesson.com/webapp/wcs/s...amp;isFirearm=Y
The issue is that they seem to come for the small j-frames only, and she needs a K or L frame-size revolver with the smallest possible pink grip
wink.gif

A very good point on the slide pull, as shes having issues chambering rounds in my 1911s.
Will look at the Taurus I mentioned next time Im Stateside, as noone I know have any over here.
As for the H&Ks, i think the USPs will be relatively large for her hands, and their grips seem more square and bulkier than the Taurus.

Re: Lady`s choice - pistol and revolver

Shy away from really small revolvers. And I have yet to see a female officer who can't work the slide with just a little practice. If your wife is going to compete, she'll practice way more than most cops. Ask me how I know.

Re: Lady`s choice - pistol and revolver

Thanks!
I will show her the 66 tomorrow, I think she will like it.
Didn't think of it before as we were looking at S&W current line only.
Would have to dig up a used one though...

I'm not afraid of Taurus, shot a few of them in the past and they seemed to function pretty good.
Anyway, brand and cost is of absolutely no issue here, I want to get her whatever is best for her.

Oh - and she dislikes handling really small things so it will be a medium-frame at least

Re: Lady`s choice - pistol and revolver

Please do not go with a Taurus, especially their poly frame guns, if you want something that is reliable then Taurus is definitely not it.

S&W M&P or Glock 17/19 or XDm9

m&p has the best ergos and is very reliable, glock is practically fail proof in 9mm, XDm is reliable and decent ergos, some may not like the grip safety.

Re: Lady`s choice - pistol and revolver

as far as slide manipulation, M&P is probably the easiest for women to work, its what my wife carries.

Re: Lady`s choice - pistol and revolver

Thanks!

Will show her the M&Ps tomorrow as well, looks great.
Some even come with her beloved pink grips... lol

The Glock 17 is standard armed forces issue sidearm over here so Im very familiar with it, and although it is one of the most reliable ones ever, I dont think its for her as its quite bulky at the top of the grip.

The only S&W pistols i handled was early metal frames, and the trigger seemed "spungy" as the plastic material seemed to give in slightly, past the hinged point. Not sure if it was just me or if it was real, felt weird anyway but then again the 1911s are my poison

.
My nearest S&W dealer is a few hours drive from here, will take her over when we get the time and have her check them out.

Re: Lady`s choice - pistol and revolver

Try the H&K P-30 (9mm)...I bought one for my Dad.... I love the grip, It feals similar to the Walther P series but I believe it's even better than that. Accuracy is fantastic., slide is easy to chamber, it has an accesory rail for lights or lazers, the grip is totally interchangeable with different sides and back straps and it is one of the most georgous weapons you will ever feast your eyes on. H&K outdid themselves on this one. I do agree with SPDSNYPR concerning the Taurus autos when compared with other brands however I would not rule out Taurus completely when it comes to their revolvers. I do like their tracker series and some concealed carry models. Yes I like smith better but I have had quite a few Taurus revolvers as well as many Smiths and I have to give them credit on making some nice revolvers. S&W makes a newer very nice 357 mag with a 6" barrel (Aprox)and a smaller frame and a birds head grip. I have held them but have never shot them. Some friends have owned them and they raved about them. I don't know the model # though. Will post that in a few minutes.........SmokeRolls

Re: Lady`s choice - pistol and revolver

I believe it's a model 63 Smith with a five inch barrel. I saw them with a beautiful wooden birds head grip about 2 years ago, it might have been a limited run or a model they no longer make outside of performance center orders......I don't know without talking to my Smith dealer...

Look up the H&K P-30..It is not to be compared with the USP in looks and feal( The controls are similar but they shape, size and look are apples and oranges). Your wife will jump for joy on that one. They aren't that cheap but man what a sweetie... They also make an "L" version which is a touch longer barrel and longer sight radius....Pick your poison......Make her happy...................SmokeRolls

Re: Lady`s choice - pistol and revolver

Whatever you do, don't buy a gun for her and say, "Here ya go." It seems like she's being included in the buying process, which is good. She should be driving the buying process, and you should be functioning as the escort and knowledge supplier when she doesn't know something. A lot of guys in gun shops look down at women and throw a compact .38 revolver at them *not all, but most*.

My wife loves her Smith & Wesson M&P Compact .40. She was originally dead-set on carrying a 1911 because she likes the metal guns. After shooting a couple (quite well might I add), she decided that the weight wouldn't be comfortable for an every day carry; and the cost of reliability was too high for the time being. She did the research on what she wanted, and after she shot my M&P, she was sold on the comfort and shootability of those guns. She was also looking at a CZ 75 and a couple different Sigs.

Next on her (mine too) list of arms-to-get is a Springfield XD .45 5" Tactical. We had the chance to shoot one of those, and while I out-shot her that time, dueling her with one would be suicide. Her first time shooting it at 15 yards was marked by a 4" group. Her second group was under 3".

Don't rule out the M&Ps, the XD(m)s, the Taurus revolvers (Please don't get one of their poly guns. Please.), Glocks, or even compact 1911s based on your opinion of them. You may get surprised when she picks one up and goes, "Oh, I like the way that feels." If she doesn't like the color, mask off the important bits and use some pink Krylon on it. I suggest also looking at the S&W MP340, the M&P .357 revolver if she is looking for a lightweight .38/.357. The ergonomics on those are more comfortable than a lot of the other small revolvers, at least to me.

It comes down to having your wife shoot as many guns as possible, finding what she likes, what she dislikes, and why. Then try and find several guns with as many of her likes and as few of her dislikes as possible. Her choice will probably lie in one of those.

Re: Lady`s choice - pistol and revolver

Give the S&W model 60 3" Hi-vis sights a look. My mom carries a model 60 with the 2 1/8" barrel. She seems to like it alot. She can run .38 spl up to full house .357 mag loads. I bought her some .38 spl gold dot 110gr short barrel ammo for self protection and thats what we keep it loaded with for protection.

Re: Lady`s choice - pistol and revolver

Thank you all!

I will take her for the grand tour of our regions gunshops pretty soon (when we both have the time at the same time...curse of our time), so she can play with as many different weapons as possible.
When it comes to the final selection, its totally up to her, my only two demands are that they must be top-quality e.g. go bang every time she pulls the trigger with whatever ammo she finds best, and she must be able to fully operate them without having to invent clever ways of manipulating levers etc.

As she will get one pistol and one revolver for now,
we are down to a 4" .357/.38+P revolver, probably be a S&W medium-frame with small rubber grips, or a Taurus (havent had the chance to play with a Taurus yet)
along with a pistol about the size of a H&K P30 / P30L (both of those are highly interesting models btw).
Other brands of interest will be Glock, SIG, CZ, as they are fairly common between the guys I hang out with.
Unfortunately, the Springfield importer has severe issues getting supplies from the factory, (last time I wanted a 1911 mil-spec I was told lead time was at least a year, with no guarantees whatsoever... Lets say I skipped that one...
wink.gif
)
That rules out any XD models, as we have decided not to import anything (that we cant easily buy over here) unless she has actually shot an identical gun, and noone that I know around here has one.

Based on your comments and other things Ive read on the interweb, the Taurus pistol is a no-go.

Just a curiosity; here is one more reason for type/caliber choice that I did not include in my first post, the "domino effect"...
Although we are one of the most liberal countries when it comes to weapons over here in Europistan, we have some regulations that could make you cry (keep in mind that the ONLY reason for having handgun permits over here is "competition shooting"....).... some of those actually forces you to buy different types of handguns in certain sequences, not to block yourself from buying others in the future.
I wont go in boring details, but that dictates that compacts will have to wait a little while, for the next round
smile.gif

Alright, Im off to pack MY bag for some serious rangetime
wink.gif

Thanks again guys.
