Gentlemen,
I was given some Lake City Match brass in 308. I have no idea how many times this brass has reloaded prior to my possession. While in the process of prepping this brass something made me think to try to chamber a non-loaded piece of sized brass. When I did, I was not able to close the bolt completely. Assuming, and I know what you get when you assume, I figured it was due to this being military brass and that my rifle (TRG22) would not allow it due to the tolerances. I then tried a resized, once fired (not in my rifle) Hornady & Winchester case and what I found out was I could close the bolt but I was getting bolt face wear on the head of my brass. I also found this to be true with Federal brass that was once fired in this rifle. What am I over looking? I am using RCBS competetion dies in a Forester press.

Thanks Gentlemen!

Re: Lake City Match Brass

Did YOU size both pieces of the brass that you were sampling?

If you did not size them both and the LC was sized when you received it run a sample of the LC brass through your die.

Sorry that is all I have.

Re: Lake City Match Brass

LC match or LC LR brass is shot through bolt action guns not machine guns. That being said, it's not uncommon to have to bump the shoulders back a bit. So bump 'em back a touch and you'll be good to go. It's just a matter of matching your dies to your chamber.

There are a number of measuring "tools" out there to help with this. Sinclair is your friend. If you don't know how your sizing die is set, you are open to many problems with reliability down the road. Or, for now, measure the shoulder with a caliper and a un-primed 40 s&w case. Before and after is what your looking at. Use a "fired" case from your rifle as a guide with the LC brass.

Re: Lake City Match Brass

Might have been shot out of an M1A before you sized it. Try resizing with a small base die and I bet it will chamber right up.

+1 - for LC Match and LR brass I use the Redding Body die then run it through a Forster Bump Bushing Die with a .337 bushing to bump the shoulders back and properly size the neck. Most 308 Full length sizing dies have a tight neck diameter for LC brass so they size the neck too tight which works the brass too much.

Feel free to drop me a PM if you have more questions.
