Looking to set up a 223 using lapua brass. Made up a dummy round and measured the neck at .250. About .013 thick necks. I also have a bunch of lake city brass on hand. Dummy rounds made up with LC brass measured .245 and .247. From what I've always heard about military brass, I expected the LC brass to be thicker in the neck than the Lapua.

Is this consistent with neck thickness on lapua brass? I plan on a no turn neck chamber set up for the lapua. Looks like everything else will fit fine. Good to know, but not exactly what I was expecting. I thought if I was going to use the military brass at all, I might have to thin the neck a bit.

Re: Lapua 223 brass neck thickness?

Those measurements are consistent with what I get for LC 07/08 brass and for recent-production Lapua Match, both with a 69gr SMK. The Lapua actually might come in closer to .251" for me. Definitely thicker than LC in my experience.

I've never been able to measure as accurately as I'd like, but I also believe the LC has a higher case capacity. This seems to be consistent with the findings here.

Thanks. I was looking for other data to confirm what I was seeing. I had seen the article on 6mmbr a while back but forgot to check there. I glanced through it again, but didn't see any mention of neck thickness. The volume comparisons make sense and correlate to neck/body wall thickness.

I appreciate the input.

Sorta gives you a "heads up" on the value of a lot of what you hear, doesn't it?

I have a bucket full of once fired Lapua Brass and I get the same measurement. .250 I am going to have Forster custom hone me another sizing die.

Absolutely! But until you have the pieces in hand to check for yourself, that's all you can go off of. I'm typically skeptical of of just about everything until I can verify what I've heard or been told.

Seems to keep me out of trouble most of the time. LOL

I know I could look it up, but what does Forster charge to custom hone a die?

Re: Lapua 223 brass neck thickness?

They are really expensive... Just joking. $12 plus the cost of the die. I get a Mil. discount so it is a little less. I have one die for some WCC brass I am using for my Service Rifle and using this dies with annealing every 4th firing I am getting some phenomenal groups, like 1/2in. @ 300 yds. Mike

Re: Lapua 223 brass neck thickness?

Thanks, LARMIKE. The last couple of dies I bought were forster and I've been pretty impressed with them. One was for my 6x47 lapua and it is just about perfect. Ordered redding neck die, but have just been using the FL die without the expander. Just about perfect. Looks like it's going to work out the same for a 7mm I'm working on now.

Now I have those type S dies that I'm probably not going to use. Oh, well, got lots of reloading stuff sitting around that seemed like a good idea to buy at the time. BLK7
