Back story... I bought a Tacticool stock for my son's 10/22. From Boyd's, it's painted black.

Can y'all recommend a topcoat/sealer that I can apply, specifically one that's tough? I'm thinking matte or semi-flat.
Durability is a must, as it's a training firearm for a young man.

I have not refinished a stock (yet) BUT from a woodworking background, I'd recommend a wipe-on oil finish. I have used Tru-Oil with great results on wood knife handles as well. If it's too shiny, use 0000 steel wool to dull it. Prep is key, as for application I just wear nitrile gloves and spread it on with my hand. You can build up a few coats and buff it down.
I like Minwax wipe-on poly as well, haven't tested the durability though. I have only used it on items that don't get handled regularly.

Rustoleum makes a Matte clear coat that works very well. It's available at home-depot.
